I think Griffith was incapable of blaming himself and during the year of torturing he resented Guts and blamed him for his capture even though from the start Griffith almost was the reason that Guts wanted to leave… Guts would have possibly been content with his life in the Band of the Hawk if Griffith hadn’t explained that he doesn’t see any of his Band members as friends because they are merely pawns he uses to get to his dream. So Griffith inadvertently caused his own downfall which led to him sacrificing his own flesh and blood as well as his colleagues so the real one in control was the demon that resonated within.
