What a great guy, right? Well we’re proven wrong. Because Griffith is a control freak. He told guts you belong to me. When guts left and broke free from his control by getting his own dream (casca), Griffith wanted to get rid of it so guts can once again be under his control
(Which is what happens during the blackswordman arc and lost children. Guts is once again swinging his sword for/towards Griffith, and not for himslef (protecting casca)

The reason he raped Casca was to torture guts. During the scene where he rapes casca. He’s staring at guts the entire time. He hates guts and resents him for leaving the band of the hawk which led to him going crazy and being tortured, leaving him in a vegetative state. He blames guts for that and so this is simply just to make him suffer.
