I don't charge any extra fees. My boss does.

"I don't raise it, finance does"
Why am I talking to you then?!

"Hey could you rob a bank for me?
"Isn't that against the law?"
"Don't worry, I won't arrest you"

Yep - best response to that is walk out.
Asked a car salesman to email me the breakdown on the deal we were doing. He PHONED me instead to tell me just the payment. So I repeated over the phone that I asked hi to EMAIL me the info (naturally I wanted to know the interest rate, car price, loan term, etc.) - He laughed out loud and said in a sarcastic tone "I don't have time for THAT!" - So I told him "Then you don't have time to sell me a car" and hung up. Some of these guys are SO shady they are afraid to put the offer in writing...man!

"You told me your dog doesn't bite!" "That's not my dog."

I'm not surprised. The salesman knew what Mike meant but couldn't be honest.

That, my friends, is called lying by omission. It's still dishonesty, and can still end you up with a fine or worse.

Dealerships are so slimy. One time I was working on a deal for a replacement (used) car. The salesman told me he would give me $6k on a trade-in on my old car (only worth about 3k). I thought "hmm". So I said "write it up", and once he did, I saw that he had indeed given me the $6k for the trade-in, but he had also marked up the price of the car I wanted to buy, by $3k. I confronted him, and he was speechless. Needless to say, I walked away.

The fact that the finance department is invisible until after you decide to buy the car is despicable. Its literally falsifying values to get you a car you cant afford

Years ago I bought a Kingston V300 SSD after seeing it had good reviews and its value was good. When I installed it, I got very disappointed by performance and then found out they switched the NAND chips to cheaper, slower NAND without changing the name. They deliberately made a good SSD, and after it got good reviews, they internal components to slower ones and kept the same name. I have advised, built, and upgraded hundreds of computers since then and I’ve always avoided that brand since the incident.

Business advice number 1 is to never be dishonest.
Business advice number 2 is to never do business with dishonest companies or people.

It's a tactic! They compartmentalize each department in order to be able to blame another department when client is unhappy to get screwed 😂

I used to deal with vendors when I handled purchasing for a couple restaurants. I always told the vendors to give me a price sheet, if you have the best price, you get the sale. Invariably, one would come back and ask what we were paying and my answer was "Less." Then they would say "Oh, I can do better!" My reply to that: "Then talk to me next month." I don't haggle. I don't share what other vendors are charging. I just don't.

When negotiating salaries, I would say what I want. They would tell me what they wanted to pay. I would give them what I considered an acceptable compromise for both of us. If they said no, I walked. If their first offer was insulting, I would say so and walk. I had someone lowball me, then when I walked away, offered me more than my ask... I still walked away. I can't do business with people who operate like that.

"oh, then why am I talking to you?" Is always the correct answer

As someone who works at a dealership, the sales person holds no negotiating power. They are only there to get you to agree on a car you want. The sales manager sets the price and the finance person sets your rate. Sometimes the sales manager does both. Negotiate with them directly, call them over. Don't do the back and forth BS. Don't feel bad about walking out either! It's not yours until you sign for it or put a deposit on it.

There is power in unwaivering honesty. So long as you are smart enough to know when others are trying to take advantage of it, you ultimately hold a lot of power. Someone who is in control while still showing you their hand is very powerful

Sidebar: we should be able to buy cars directly from manufacturers.

Always be prepared to walk. Dealerships want you as invested in the sale as possible, so they'll leave all the crummy stuff til the very end.

I run into this a lot. I have to tell people “see I told you from the beginning because I wanted to avoid this, but you thought I was gonna change my mind if you lied to me at the beginning and now we’ve both wasted our time because I’m leaving.”

I’m a sophomore in high school and I’m aiming at becoming a lawyer. Mike’s content has helped me grasp a greater understanding of the job and I will be forever thankful

I checked out a bunch of cars before the dealer could spot me. Went home with my finds, pulled out Kelly Blue book and printed off pages. (before they went pay to use). Brought the pages back and asked to check over each car I liked the book price of. When we sat down to negotiate a hatchback beetle, I held up the paper. "Where did you get that?" "Kelly Blue Book. So, let's discuss price." He looked SO mad he couldn't mark me up. I learned from my parents and car mechanic cousins.
