I did it for a year. It was a new and used dealer. Long hours, customers lying their asses off, on your feet all day, in all types of weather. It takes a toll on your health if you're not careful. If your sales manager is a jerk, it's worse. I detested my finance guy....he was very slow, so there would be times you had to keep a customer entertained for a couple of hours after you wrote the deal. Yeah, car dealers can be jerks, but I came to detest the American public after a few months.

Did it for a month. Sold 8 cars in training. Left because a better opportunity was brought to my attention. This was by far the worst jobs I have ever taken on. How they take advantage of customers is pretty sad. If you have any morals or integrity don’t do it. High stress levels

I've sold at a high volume Ford store paid on units and both a low and high volume Porsche store where in both cases I was paid commission on gross profit. Anyone who makes a career out of the car business is too scared to take a chance to make something for themselves instead of being a slave to the store in my opinion. Many of the people I have worked with had the skillset to do something better for themselves but were too comfortable with the security the dealership provided them. The car business is supposed to be a stepping stone and a learning opportunity. Though truth be told, I learned more about sales in six months of selling pest control door to door than I did in 5 years of car sales.

I used to be a salesman. It's a tough racket.

too many dealerships are obligated to be dishonest. that’s the # 1 problem with dealerships around the country.

You forgot dealing with all different types of weather elements snow rain intense heat.... usually salespeople are the ones clearing snow off over 200 + cars
Another is most car dealerships have narcissistic sales managers who expect you to be gofers and run and get lunches and do multiple tasks that have nothing to do with sales
You have salespeople standing outside smoking...and of course the house Mouse who kisses asses to get deals while you're working like a dog.... and they are giving deals to the ass kissers
It's a cut throat backstabbing
Also you are getting in a car with a total stranger that you don't know some people drive like maniacs and weirdos
You are basically treated like crap by management & customers don't like or trust you.... everyone talks down to you .... everyone
And no matter how successful you are rarely a compliment
Nor a good job
The hours are unbearable long and stressful and hard many rejections after long hard hours... spending time and effort and making 0 or worse they come in on your day off and buy the car from someone else
Since the internet and CRMs you have no peace your mind is tortured constantly by notifications that your customer you've been following up with is on the showroom and Bill switched them into his name
& nothing like walking outside in snow or rain to pull up a car and the battery is dead and no gas and you've got to jump it
And get gas in it and most customers have add and they lose interest if they are waiting too long I could go on and on it's a horrible job the only redemption is the $$ you can make an excellent living but eventually your soul becomes broken in the process

Man I tried it for about 6 months. Thinking being a car guy would help out, because I’m enthusiastic about the product I’m selling but it couldn’t be further from the truth. Being paid base pay on salary, like you said it doesn’t matter how many hours you work if you’re not making sales you’re not getting paid for the time you’re there every week. A very tough job to get acquainted to.

This is a very honest video about it. I work in car sales for 10 years and it’s getting really old. I’m looking for something else. Money isn’t everything.

Did this “job” for several months in Ohio back when. Unemployment in County was 16%, was sold a total lie by the Owner. only pay was % of your sales. Lost our ass. Worst part was Demanding, Lying, Owner (relative ) sabotaged all efforts trying to show he was Napoleon. Total joke. Learned a lot . $$$ lost. Despise car Dealers. Lost Relatives on top of it all. Never again.

I went and looked at a car today but decided I don’t think I should get one just yet until I get my credit in a little bit better shape and can afford a larger down payment. They offered me 5700 down payment with a 699 monthly payment!?!? For a 27k Kia Forte. And then to trade in my car they’d only offer me 500 bucks lmao. So I said I’ll take some time to think about it before I sign anything. But the lady who was trying to sell me looked so salty and I felt bad and apologized for wasting their time and she was like oh no you’re fine but I could tell she was kinda mad. I mean I definitely still want that car or one close to it and I’ll probably go back to that dealership. But yeah and then they tried to have me look at something around 14-15k but I want that Kia Forte GT so in the long run I think it’s better to wait until I’m at a better financial standing so I can get what I want and my car will still last me probably another 30k miles or so.

My cousin sold new Fords and made $150, 000-$250, 000 yr for about 10 years. The Mom/Pop dealership sold out and they brought in their own sales people from other stores that they owned in the area, so they let him go. Now he is doing termite inspections making $18/hr and said the spending adjustment is "brutal" he had to sell his 2023 Raptor and his Wife's 22 Expedition and his wife had to get a job..

On my 3rd year. I really hate it. I’ve made the decision to go back to school in the summer. Idc if I end up making the same or less after graduation as long as I don’t feel like a scummy POS anymore. Even having worked a two “good dealerships” (both family owned, no dealer adds, etc), I feel like shit. Every dealer, without exception, will try to hold on trades which preys on the uninformed. And just because someone is uninformed doesn’t mean they deserve to be taken advantage of (and yes, I’ve held on many trades to make a living and pay for my house). Currently, the plan is to sell my house, get right with God, and move on to a career that actually does something for the world.

I worked 70 plus hours a week. Selling 15-20 cars a month which put me near the top of the salespeople at the ford/Toyota dealership I worked at. But, my pay was dismissal. Commission was 275 for new car and 75 for used.
