I think she hesitated on the payment because the car kept going into the shop and she had to wait 2 weeks to get the $100 back from him. She probably was going to use that towards her payment. Bad decision all the way around.

I worked closely with Westlake Financial services - they have a 1st payment default policy, because they are second change financing . If you don’t make your first payment your contract goes into default and the bank returns the contract to the dealer and makes them purchase the car back.

My dealership has a statement that clearly states if you default on your payment you forfeit any money down.

He note was due on the 15th of the month. If she paid November's car note on December 6th, then December's payment wasn't due until the 15th. She was not behind when he repossessed the car.

As someone who always needs to take advantage of a payment grace period due to financial circumstances, I wish more people would understand that it’s not some special consequence free payment date. It’s meant to help those who struggle financially, but that doesn’t mean it’s still not technically a late payment that won’t affect you later even if there’s no fee attached.

It’s still better to pay on time if you can and not have it set in your mind the due date is different, because then you might accidentally adjust your sense of timing and start feeling like you can pay late after the grace period since you’ve been considering that later date as your payment due date. Don’t let yourself fall into that hole if you can avoid it, it is a very difficult cycle to climb out of.
