In both science and clinical practice, female attention-
deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has long been neglected. In
a synthetic talk, Hinshaw will convey reasons for this state of
affairs. He’ll also discuss both sex differences in and female-
specific features of ADHD and its underlying dimensions of
inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity. Hinshaw will convey key
mechanisms underlying the major risk for internalizing symptoms,
self-harm, and unplanned pregnancy in girls with ADHD by
adolescence and early adulthood and identify the stigma that still
attaches to ADHD, especially in females, along with an update on
evidence-based treatments.

So much of this presentation describes me. The social worker that spoke at the end is one of the lucky ones, like me, but we have been so hurt as a result of the delay in identification and support. It’s nice to see more information is getting out there and the next generation will have more support.

I "only" have ADD. So in middle school and high school I was an "airhead" who excelled in languages and couldn't get Algebra to save her life. I hated the constraints of teaching (Special Ed, interestingly) but was a great bartender. Law school was A LOT but at age 30 I'd found antidepressants, white noise, class recording feedback, and keeping meticulous track of how much time I needed to spend on each subject. The practice of law was a real challenge, but also had a positive impact on mind training. Also some colors hurt my eyes so there's that lol.

The other thing is that they don't tend to include bullying as trauma or maltreatment right? But looking at this it looks like these things are very shattering for girls with ADHD

I was an airhead and chatter box in high school but excelled in school and was top student in my Masters Degree year but juggling kids, works, life made my gifted IQ not enough to mask it anymore. I hated the constraints of teaching and some colours hurt my eyes and I also have RSD and strong sense of justice.

Rewards don't work for me - intrinsic reward probably would if I trusted myself - wondering what your views on pathological demand avoidance and how that presents - could it be some people develop PDA due to unidentified Neurodivergence? eg ADHD/Autism/plus specific traumas? Do you recognise PDA ?

Oh FANTASTIC. Some random MAN thinks they can talk about ADHD in women... Way to perpetuate the problem. 🙄🙄🙄
