Easiest Way to Make SWEET POTATO SLIPS

This year I experimented with starting sweet potato slips directly in the garden bed. It worked!⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣You have to wait until the soil warms up in the spring, so it may not work as well in cooler climates. ⁣⁣⁣

That is a great new way, years ago I have graduated from the toothpick and the water, started just putting a potato halfway in some dirt and letting it sprout that away, I have just graduated from that method, I will put it straight in the ground next year, thank you

I wish I had remembered my childhood, growing sweet potatoes, I am now trying to get some sweet potato slips.

Maybe I'm just blessed where I live, but I've never had to root slips in water. I usually just pull them off a tuber I left in the garden and plant them lying flat about an inch or two deep with just the end few leaves poking out. The different varieties respond differently but they rarely fail outright.

I put my sweet potatoes in trays of shallow water in April. I change water as needed. The slips are almost big enough to root in water👍 Everything takes time with gardening but at least it will be warm enough to plant in big tubs soon💚

Yup, it is faster than putting it in water, but I did it too because I'm excited for spring.

I plant mine sideways and mound up a bit of soil or vermiculite around the slips if you need to as they emerge. The slips will develop roots as they grow and you can snap them off and plant them right away. Skip the whole water jar step.

Living in a cool temperate climate, I start my sweet potatoes indoors in soil trays or water. The slips from the soil trays are always stronger and off to a headstart as they already have roots by the time I snap them off.

If u toss one in the dirt and just let the slips grow where they are will u get sweet potato back? Or just making a nice bunch of Greenery?

I just tried something similar, I just took cuttings off a sweet potato I have growing in a pot, so far the two I planted in soil look like they're doing fine. I also put two in water and they are making roots. Is this the same as slips, or are they just cuttings?

Once you take the slips out do you leave that sweet potato and wait for more slips to form? Or put it completely in the ground ?
