hmong sweet pork, or braised pork belly ~

This dish is a hmong food I grew up eating, but I know other cultures have slight variations of this under a different name. Food is something we all have in common, so.. what do you call this?

✨written recipe + measurements

📝 grocery list
pork belly, skin on
eggs
garlic
lemongrass
ginger
galangal
sugar + water
oil
salt
low-sodium soy sauce
oyster sauce
fish sauce
dark soy sauce

**all of the ingredients I use can be found in my amazon storefront

Don’t be intimidated by this slightly lengthy list of ingredients. This recipe is extremely simple - even a beginner cook can do it! Most of the cooking time is completely hands off and you’ll be left with the most tender pork belly that’s soft enough to be cut with a spoon :)

Oh my gosh! It’s so nice to finally see Hmong food influencers! Everyone I watch that cooks food is always Korean and I’m like…”dang, I wish people could understand how good Hmong food is!” Thank you for making this video from one Hmong person to another!

This reminds of of a dish my Mimi makes called “pork and egg” (idk how to pronounce it in Vietnamese). My dad married a wonderful Vietnamese lady and I love anything Vietnamese. I’m not Vietnamese myself but I love the culture I was adopted into. My Mimi is everything to me and I love her so much. Especially her cooking! I’m happy to see something that reminds me a a little bit of home. Thank you so much 😊

Try palm sugar instead white sugar.. since it's made from coconut, it adds more aroma big time..
Or you can use sweet soysuace instead, i'd recommend Bango brand☺️

Oh my god, I love this. I spent four and a half years working in a restaurant where almost everyone was Hmong. I miss Hmong food so much, and its still my comfort food to this day. ❤

So we use dark beer and oranges then hit with Sazon black pepper oregano and we use garlic/onions as well and then we use cilantro and flat leaf parsley soy sauce or salt. In the oven not boiled

Im an expat in Taiwan. My local friend's mother recently made this for her. I think the Mandarin Chinese name for this dish is 紅燒肉 hongshao rou (lit. red-braised meat). I have also had chicken made this way in Taiwan.

Similar to a Laotian dish called Tom khem. I heard there's quite a bit of similarities between the two culture's food
