Too HOT? Cool your room Properly. How to Stop blowing hot Air in house: Natural AC with Window Fans?

Anyone that lives in a region with heat domes, hot summers or heat waves and heat warnings knows how hard it is to relax or sleep when it’s 27°C and up in the house. If you don’t have central or portable AC units and don’t want to or can’t spend that much money on one or just want to be more environmentally friendly, the window fan is an alternative that can help keep you cool at home.

I have found window fans work best to cool a hot room without AC. Try this solution to help you survive scorching heat in today's changing weather patterns due to global warming/climate change.

Watch to find out how to use a window fan, including which way to blow the air... in or out (Intake or Exhaust) and how to keep the cool air coming in clean!

CAUTION: Do not use this method of cooling if the outside air quality is bad and has high pollutants, smoke particles, Ozone, etc... Using this method in such conditions will bring in unwanted and dangerous particulates into your home and cause health issues.
Watch out for air quality warnings, alerts and pay attention to local weather events such as wildfires, etc... Even when pollutant levels are low, but if you have breathing related health issues like COPD, asthma, etc... you should avoid using this method of cooling even if an air filter is used.

If you decide to use an air filter with the window fan, make sure that it does not cause the fan motor to overheat if it's restricting the airflow too much. This can happen if you use the High fan speed and/or use a filter that is too restrictive or high in filtering capabilities.

Keep the fan at least an inch away from the air filter (it can be at an angle) so that there is some air space between the filter and the fan and this will help.
Overheating can cause the fan motor to burn out!

NOTE: I find that an air filter with MERV6/MPR500 rating is a good balance between filtering and air flow.
Also, if you live in an area that has polluted or dirty air, a window fan may not be the best choice as it could bring in dirty air into your room causing allergy or breathing issues.

Great idea with the filter also adds privacy while letting in light. Different living spaces will benefit differently from different window fan configurations and you should only air out when the outdoor humidity is lower than inside. If you spend all night / morning filling your home with 75% RH you are going to feel more miserable regardless of how cool you got it. I pay attention to local weather and indoor temp/humidity stats and set reminder timers for the optimal time to exchange the air.

Opening two distant windows, with a fan blowing out of one positioned about 2 feet from the window is several times more effective than running the window frame fan you have blowing in.

The room you want to cool the most should be the one without a fan. The outside air will be pulled in. It may seem like more outside air is pulled in with the window fan blowing in, but only a small fraction of the air stream you feel is outside air. Pulled air comes from all directions, so always blow air out of your house, and ideally from a couple feet back (e.g. with a pedestal fan) so your pulling less air from outside as you're trying to blow it out. This will swap at least 4x the inside and outside air per watt of power vs your inline window fan blowing in.

The best setup that works for us (in a dry climate) is to have one fan pull air in from the outside from one window and have one fan blow the air out from a second window. For us, we have a window in the kitchen that a fan pulls the hot air out. We have a fan in the bedroom (same level and near the kitchen) pulling the outside air in. We leave the bedroom door open, and there isn't a door in the kitchen. So, the two fans are then working together to pull the cool air throughout the apartment.

We live in a small place and on one level. But, the concept makes sense for multilevel homes, too. People would just have to have a similar set up on the other levels.

I have also tried using two fans in one window with one facing forward and the other facing outward. It helps in that one room better than just putting up one fan pulling in the cool air because it is also pulling the hot air out. However, unless a person wants to use two fans in each window in their home, it's not going to work for the whole home.

As a side note: we only use the fans ah night for a little while then in the early morning. They are off the rest of the day to save money. We don't have air conditioning or swamp coolers. Our place stays realty cool until around 3 or so in the afternoon, then it starts getting quite warm by the time we start the fans again at night. I personally think it gets too cold in the morning, and I've had people think I had air conditioning when I really didn't. 🙂

This would be great...if I didn't live in the desert. The low during the summer is still in the high 70's/low 80's. What I need is a way to use one fan to push the warm air out and another fan to just blow towards me.

Not sure if it's possible with the fan setup you have, but I find this most efficient:
Turn the fan on in the evening or early morning, and let it blow out the warm air inside your home.
Open a window or two on the other side of your house. This creates an under-pressure inside your home which will draw in cold air from the outside.
As soon as the sun hits your home, close all windows and blinds/shades to keep the cooler air in.
Obviously this requires a colder outside temperature during the night, so it doesn't work everywhere.

I have an Airthings air quality monitor and trust me, the outside air is not 'dirty air from outside'. Its actually very clean compared to what builds up indoors. Filtering the outside air coming in is probably doing more harm because of the less airflow and more power needed to cool the room and environmental result of the power usage than any 'dirty air' you might be filtering out. Although I suppose if you have allergies or something it would make sense..

in Florida the hottest during the day is 40 C and coldest at night is like 26 C at 70 to 80 % humidity

The problem with this is if you live in a place like Philly where in the Summer theres no cool air to speak of to draw in at night because its humid as hell then window fans are really useless.

Given the prolonged 38 plus high humidity heatwave these solutions are only making the problem worse. Tried swamp AC and it too make the problem worse. Got a proper heat pump AC that doubles as a dehumidifier and that finally can handle extreme heatwaves but boy oh boy does it suck electricity. I need to look at severe backup power incase the power grid dies for the day.

Most professionals say to have the hot air sucked OUT of the house. Having another fan, like the standing fan, point up to the ceiling.

I have my window fan in my bathroom sucking the air out for obvious reasons lol and because pollen 🤧 and a pedestal fan in the corner of my room(its a master bedroom) and on the second floor

I always have my window fan blowing inside air outside, If you blow inside outside you're taking the heat of the room & removing it from the room instead of just mixing outside air with the heat already present in the room if you have it pulling air in.

I had a window fan, but it started smoking and stuff like that ever since then my family would not buy a window fan
