Another big part as to why Chinese Water Torture was so effective is because people at that point in history quite literally believed that the water could bore a hole right through your skull, much like how rain can cause mudslides and rivers can carve canyons out of rock via erosion. It didn't JUST feel like there was a hole being drilled into their brain because of some dripping water, but because they believed that was 100% what was happening as the dripping slowly became more painful than irritating. Much like the reason behind the irregular drips, the whole thing was more psychological torture than anything, preying on the misconceptions of the time.
