What's craziest about this is the fact that their courts had far less efficient methods of collecting evidence against people in the past which means that statistically speaking every single one of these methods probably would have killed a decent number of innocent people. Humans have such a knack for devising systems of punishment so brutal you can’t help but overlook the criminal’s crimes and just have sympathy for them as a person

Its important to remember that these punishments were less about justice and more about deterrence by instilling fear. They couldn't even catch 1% of the criminals back then, so the ones that did get caught needed to be made an example of. But then again, it was all too easy to frame an innocent person and torture them
