The Cirneco dell'Etna are purebreds from the island of Sicily; they have a sweet nature yet are independent sighthounds with high energy. The Cirneco is a calm-mannered dog that will suit family life, even families with children.

Although they are perhaps better suited to families with older children, it's a little surprising they have such a genial personality, mainly as they were bred as speedy hunting dogs.

Because of their hunting origins and high prey drive, the Cirnechi may have issues with other small household pets. If you are going to introduce one of these dogs to your family and already have a small pet, you're going to need to start socialization exceptionally early on in the puppy's life.

Cirneco dell’Etna Temperament

The Cirneco dell'Etna are constantly on the alert and very independent. However, they are also very loyal and affectionate with their human family.

The dog enjoys being around children, as long as they are a little older and know how to behave and handle dogs. The Cirneco is very playful, which is another reason why they enjoy the company of older children.

Their original purpose was a sighthound for hunting small, fast prey such as rabbits and hares. Cirnecho has never really lost their prey drive, so owners need to be wary of them around small domestic pets; they will chase and possibly kill if they catch them.

The Cirneco is an adaptable dog and is equally happy living in an urban environment in an apartment as he is in a house with a large backyard.

Because of their independence, they need obedience and socialization training from a very young age. If not, they can be stubborn and will develop bad habits quickly.

If they get the early socialization, they can get on with other household pets, mainly if the Cirneco was introduced slowly and was a young puppy.

Typically friendly and outgoing even with strangers, the Cirneco shouldn't be anxious or timid.

Training the Cirneco dell'Etna shouldn't be too difficult as long as no harsh methods are used. The dog can be sensitive to the tone of voice. They respond so much better to calm, kind and consistent training with lots of praise and a few favorite treats thrown in.

Cirneco dell’Etna Common Health Problems

Typically the Cirnechi are pretty healthy and robust dogs, and the AKC (American Kennel Club) hasn't put forward any suggested health tests that breeders should provide.

But the dog is a living creature, and sometimes they get sick or develop severe health conditions. No amount of healthy breeding can prevent some illnesses.

Always consult your veterinarian when you decide to get a puppy for the best advice on caring for them. The vet will advise about vaccinations, diet, and regular checkups.

Cirneco dell'Etna Diet & Nutrition

Cirnechi enjoy their food, and it's effortless to overfeed this breed. Carefully measure out the food based on the dog's weight and the number of calories for his energy levels.

You should choose a balanced diet for active, small to medium-sized dogs. The food you feed your dog should include a feeding guide; for the dog's weight, there should be a calorie amount and how many grams or cups make up the correct amount of calories.

Don't overfeed your Cirneco dell'Etna because you will only damage his health down the road. Overweight dogs suffer from bone, joint, and heart conditions.

If you give your dog occasional treats, they shouldn't represent more than 10% of their daily calories, and the amount needs deducting from the daily calorie allowance.

Final Thoughts - Cirneco dell’Etna

The Cirneco dell’Etna is a loving, friendly and affectionate family pet; they love playing with older children and are always available for a cuddle.

They have a high prey drive, so as an owner, you should be aware of this and prepare by never going off-leash with this dog. If you have other pets in the home, introduce your new puppy slowly; don’t be in a rush. Remember to start early socialization and training.
