The Giant Schnauzer was created to be a working dog breed, so he has intelligence and drive. He can be a loyal and courageous companion for the person who can provide him with the training, exercise, and attention he needs.

A Quick Overview:
Group: Working Dogs
Weight: 55 to 80 pounds
Height: 1 foot, 11 inches to 2 feet, 3 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 10 to 12 years

This is a big dog with a big personality. He's an energetic, intelligent companion who makes life interesting with his independent thinking and playfulness, but dominant personality and bold approach to life. In short, he's a handful, even for experienced dog owners. Still, in the right home he's a loyal and courageous companion.

There is no limit to the capabilities of a well-trained Giant Schnauzer. Obedience, agility, tracking, carting, and herding are among the dog sports in which you can find him competing. Originally used to drive cattle to market, he excels as a police and guard dog and more recently has branched out to drug detection and search and rescue. He has a gentle and loving side as well, making him an admirable therapy dog. But the Giant Schnauzer's favorite activity is being with the people he loves.

We just purchased one, she’s 10 weeks now. I love how intently they look at you. It’s like they just want to soak you in. I’ve never had a dog that looks at me that way. They bond very quickly!

It's interesting you mention GS's have very acute hearing. That was something we noticed with our GS "Hansy". He had astonishing hearing, really astonishing. Much more acute than your average dog. For most of the time we had Hansy, we lived in a semi-suburban/semi-rural area and had quite a big yard. Hansy could hear deer that were just loitering around way, way far away from the house - even from inside with all the windows shut. He had very acute hearing. And we were very fond of him. He was a big, fast, strong dog - with jaws that were like some kind of hydraulic machine. Very, very strong jaws. He was a truly tremendous watchdog, but I would say the GS is not a breed for your typical family that wants a combination pet/watchdog. GS's are past "watchdog", they are very serious guard dogs. Big, very strong, seriously aggressive with people they do not know, and they can also be aggressive with people they do know (you REALLY do have to control them) - past the "watchdog" category that your typical family would consider a suitable pet. And they have a serious stubborn streak. No problem with cold weather either, they like it. Hansy was always in the low 90 pound area, weight-wise. And we sure do miss him. He was a great, great animal.

A giant schnauzer was featured on a documentary series called animal heroes after he saved his family from her ex-husband and his brother who broke in armed with both a knife and a metal baseball bat. The dog was trained as a personal protection dog and was sent to confront the intruders. He bit both men severely despite being stabbed and beaten with the bat, was able to chase off the intruders.
The dog under went surgery to repair stab wounds to his neck, chest and shoulder. He also received a hairline fracture of his skull.
The 2 men received custodial sentences for breaking and entering, animal cruelty, possession of offensive weapons, going equipped, as well as fraud. The ex mother in law was given a short jail term for perverting the course justice by providing a false alibi and disposing of evidence.
The dog, a black male called Hercules made a full recovery from his injuries.

I worked at a schnauzer breeder kennel near the airport. These dogs are truly underrated guard dogs. They grew on me. One of my top 10 dog breeds. But Browser the giant schnauzer was 110Ibs. Huge

Compliment!!! After the Doberman, my second secret love! Pinschers and Schnauzers are very good working and utility dogs. With good breeding and management, absolute all-rounders.

Gotta be honest, this is the most intelligent fast learning, most loyal, and hardest working dog I've ever owned (and I have had 8 dogs!)
BUT im not so sure about the guard dog part, she's pretty friendly and LOVES people
Also she doesn't bark as much as the video says, they do get bored though but its because they are so smart.

I wish we could post picture in here.. My giant Schnauzer is the best dog with my son, since infancy, I have the best pictures of them playing! He is very loud... So much so we named him Boomer. Hahaha I always had Rottweilers before, and when my last past away I thought I would never have anything else. I found Boomer through a friend who works at a vet clinic that also does adoptions. Boomer washed out of service dog training because he was too hyper for his elderly owners, but he is perfect for a house full of children, and horses! He is just as protective as my Rottweilers ever were, but honestly at least a little bit smarter and way easier to train.

Yup I had one of these for 13 years all you say is true. They are awesome gorgeous and true Velcro dogs. They will worry you to death wanting to do something or wanting attention though. If you don't give it to them they will make your life miserable getting into everything and tearing stuff up. They are a high energy. high pray dog you must exercise at least 2 times a day every day. Honestly I wouldn't own another one they are just to rough for me and to needy. They want constant attention from you and always trying to get you to do something with them. I wouldn't recommend these dogs unless you are a jogger and take them with you on your runs every day. Mine would pee on the back of my leg when we would get around other dogs lol
