Y'all it's 2023. I'm addicted to my phone and I honestly feel like I'm missing out on life. We gotta get our lives back. Let's get our lives back

I just got a kindle and my main goal this year is whenever I notice I'm bored and reach for my phone, to instead grab my kindle and do some reading. Good luck to everyone else who's battling phone addiction in the new year, we got this 🥳

I love how honest you are. you aren’t trying to demean others like some YouTubers do. instead of shaming people for being on their phones, you say like “hell yeah, I do it too!” and I love that.

Personally I think it can just be the phone itself and not even social media. I deleted socials, all of them, and found myself scrolling on news sites, the weather, music, my notes, pictures, etc. As soon as I deleted a problem app I’d have another problem app without even realizing until I checked my weekly screentime. Worst part is, I’m very antisocial. I don’t respond to texts, emails, calls, for near weeks at a time. I just, get stuck in the comfort of doing nothing. Phone addiction is something that for people like me, a very serious problem that can only be fixed by completely removing the phone. Unfortunately that causes issues like not being able to bank, check in at the gym, clock in at work, etc. They’re just everything nowadays. I wish that employers and other people were more open to those who want to use flip phones but that’s just not an option for me. Hopefully with the help of therapy and treating some of my other mental health issues, my phone addiction will improve but damn, it is an awful thing humanity has created.

I think phones aren't addictive i think the apps which are in it are addictive if you agree....

I love the fact that you recognize, that people not only want to break their phone addiction to be more productive and do work. Sometimes what we miss because of shitty scrolling entertainment is actually good entertainment such as books or movies

I've gotten to the point where I hate being on YouTube because I see nothing that interests me, everything bored me but I stay there because I feel obliged to do so because it's what I'm used/supposed to (be) doing at this point of the day. And that feeling gets mixed up with the whole "I'm too tired to do anything right now so I'll just binge watch YouTube ad nauseam until I go to bed early and tomorrow I'll be more rested" spoiler alert: I never feel rested the day after because I couldn't sleep until 3am

I really appreciate the scientific look at it because then I don't feel like crying over how much I hate myself for having a phone addiction. I just look at it technically and then feel more motivated to change. Thank you.

1. bring awareness (knowing how much screen time etc.)
2. swapping old habits (for example change your lock screen to remind you of your goals + read more books)
3. environmental change (not charging your phone in your bedroom, don't have it next to your bed)

4. turn off notifications
5. try mindfulness

Something that I think might also be useful is to have a "commonplace notebook". I always find myself opening my phone and either forgetting what I was supposed to do or getting distracted just like the spotify example you gave lol. Using a commonplace notebook helped me a lot because there's nothing that could possibly distract me if all I needed to do is capture a thought or list something down. I think debloating my phone and switching to browser versions of apps also helped because I only check when I think I need to instead of whenever a notification pops up.

I was so addicted to twitter, until I decided waking up with anxiety over an app is just not worth it. You really don't realize how much time you have to do better things until you distance yourself from social media. I hope to stick to it with other social medias!

A tip for people, if you like art or writing, carry a sketchbook around with you. Instead of going on your phone, draw something. If you still want to go on social media, find things you actually enjoy and give yourself 30 mins-1hr of it a day, (you can use screen time on your phone).

Thank you. I recently realized that all my problems I have (Sleep problems, School problems, emotional problems etc.). That all comes from social media. I always thought that social media would help me out and it only satisfied me, it made me feel like im in a different world. But actually all this started because of social media. I don't have many online friends (2), I have more rl friends and I'm proud of that. But still hearing how one of my friend is on her phone for only 1 hour a day makes me think if I should try that too. And I will. I want to. I want to make my dreams come true. I only played them in my head and I always said to my self "I'm going to start tomorrow" and did I do it ? No. I was on social media. I want to change that. I have a love for books and I have soooo many that I want to read but I always get distracted by my phone. I want to make my dreams come true. I want to be proud of myself and even (maybe) cure my problems! Cause also because of social media I had to fight through some deep depression last year that I luckily managed to control a little bit.

I just want to say that it is never late to start and if you think of starting it.. then do it now..in the future you will regret not doing it earlier.

Like me I want to be a dancer, a pro handball player and an artist! All this ! But have I started practicing? No. That's why I will start now. Start my dream.

I wish everyone a happy new year and stay healthy ^^

I'm working on my addiction. It's not the phone but it's definitely the apps that are at fault. They are literally designed to have our attention. I quit Instagram earlee this year but youtube has definitely been pretty hard.

I think because of the pandemic people have become less social for obvious reasons but it would be something easier to overcome if EVERYONE as a collective would work on their addictions.

You might be working hard to change but when you start seeing those around you are actually where you were a month ago, it's hard to make new friends or have a genuine conversation now. Everyone is in their phones.

I remember a time when there were no apps. It was indeed an amazing time.

Deleting tiktok was the best decision I’ve made in 2022, maybe even the best decision ever
