Actually you can use orange oil or minerals spirits with a paint brush afterwards and it will blend the colors much better, they also make products dedicated to this, typically for colored pencils blending but it works with crayons as well

The problem with pressing really hard is that you can't use layers. So you pretty much can't fix a blending mistake or adjust the color
