How to push start a car with a flat battery. This method is also known as bump starting and clutch starting. I demonstrate the process in three different cars with different starting systems - key start, key less start and key and push button start.

Doing this can be dangerous as your brakes and steering will be stiff until the engine is started.

Great tip!! I would use 2nd gear and get up to about 10mph so it doesn’t slow down as much. If you own a diesel car and if you need to roll/bump start it, it requires to build up more speed and have it in the higher gear due to higher compression in the engine. I love when you drive a different car and teaching us how to drive a different car!😊

As always, more clear and well explained than most videos on Youtube, thank you!

Great demonstration as always! From my experience, higher gears like 2nd or 3rd or even higher depending on the speed and gear ratios are definitely better for bump starting. Remember that you don't need to spin the engine very fast to start it, the starter only spins it at around 200-300 RPM anyways. My Honda Civic bump starts in 5th gear at about 10 MPH very easily and smoothly and I'm sure it would start even lower than that. This is a good thing to practice before you actually need to do it too, somewhere safe of course.

Great tips!! This was so relatable! Iv been the one pushing the car to do this many times! (but dint know what was actually going on to get the car started! - just that we're bumpin it!) I just asked my mate, and apparently 2 is the gear that's widely used. :)

IT's been a couple years since I had to bump start my car. Thank you, I'd forgotten how easy it is (I park on a steep hill so that part is easy). Funny, I'm in the US and the videos I've watched have had the driver on the right LOL. Good to know it works in reverse, if I can't get it going on the forward run, I'll be lined up to go reverse down the hill.

You make it look so gosh darn easy. Done this with 80s and 90s cars and those old junkers needed like 10 meters on gear to start.
Edit. Always start with second gear, especially with old cars that need longer to start.

Very good to know this! I always assumed jump starting from another car's battery would be the only way. May come in handy one day!
