V.good, clear commentary. We the UK, via our original church,   rejected Roman initial solicitations & blandishments at the arrival here of Augustine, thus retaining its holy status, then handing on this same spiritual legacy to the US via the Pilgrims. Rom 11v16...the celebrating of Thanksgiving to this day attests to the fact that you can't escape your roots!

Good point on the religious toleration issue - I think Pennsylvania holds that claim better than any of the other colonies, since William Penn founded it explicitly with freedom of religion in mind. It's no surprise that Philadelphia became a magnet for philosophers and artisans of all stripes. However the Puritans were remarkably liberal in other areas, particularly concerning personal liberty, education, and slavery. Puritans highly valued education, and the colonies they settled were among the most educated in the world. They were also fiercely anti-slavery, which goes without saying, considering New England would be the hotbed of anti-slavery activity throughout early America.
