I was in elementary school in Detroit in the 60s and took the first ever Black History classes that were taught. The teacher that taught those classes was an older Black woman. She not only taught classes with more insight then the books gave, she also encouraged us to use the Libraries to learn on our own. She gave us names of historical people to look up, authors whose books we should read and most importantly, do not take anyone's word on a subject that you care about to be fact, research it yourself.
You will often find that the truth is uncomfortable.
