What's the best 4x4 pickup truck? | 2019 MEGATEST | Autocar

We've got all of the major contenders together in one disused quarry for one massive off-road megatest, to discern which of the above double-cab pickups - all four-wheel drive, all rugged, and all capable of carrying more than one tonne in their load bays - is the fairest of them all.

And once we've done that, we'll line it up against the biggest, baddest pickup truck we've yet driven: a Unimog U218 'implement carrier', ten tonnes and £100,000 worth of badass pickupery.

When it comes to heavy duty 4x4, durability, practicality and long life without going to workshops there is nothing better than TOYOTA.

This is what happens when people who don't know the tools do the test.
In L200 4H, no terrain is entered. In this mode the front to rear ratio is 40/60.
In the L200 4H mode, even dry asphalt can rotate a full turn. (Audi quatro style)

L200 4HLC is entered into the field. The front to rear ratio is 50/50.
L200 4LLC is low mode of rock and deep mud.

In other words, there is no 40/60 compared to the vehicle in this position if you put the vehicle in the field is the result.

Hilux 4H mode = L200 4HLC.
The clever friend who did the test could have applied the correct testing method if he had mixed some catalogs.

It can never be used in dry air and at high speeds in 40/60 4x4 mode since Hilux does not have a mid-shift mode with shift
It is clearly stated in the user manual.

L200 / 4H mode = No Hilux equivalent.
L200 / 4HLC mode = Hilux 4H mode.
L200 / 4LLC mode = Hilux 4LC mode.

Vehicle finder doing test.

Brits: “you don’t buy a pickup truck unless you absolutely need the capability”
Americans: “check out the F-350 I bought because it looks cool”

I am English, always drove Mercedes, BMW and VW in the UK. I moved to Thailand and bought a Toyota Hilux Pick Up. Great vehicle, well built and reliable but what I really like is the fact that you can open the bonnet and have access to all the mechanics of the vehicle. With a BMW you spend the first hour removing all the plastic covers to get to the engine and those plastic covers usually break in time.

Isn't the ranger available with a 200bhp 3.2L 5cilinder diesel engine? i mean, comparing the v6 amarok with a 150hp ranger is a bit unfair, isnt it?

It'd be nice if you do a test that also focus a little bit more on the pickup as a workhorse not just off road but also how it does with max payload how much strain it does to the suspension.
Personally I like car advice more because they categorize it.

Mitsubishi the best pickup or car for 40/50 years old vehicle also can still exist and good running

In Australia, we grew up with utes. With extra suspension could carry 1 ton. The vehicles shown here are what we call single or crew cab Utes. Yes, they are bigger and carry larger payload, but in day to day running around they are overkill. I remember back in the '70s when I was working out in the Simpson Desert, the local cocky bought a ford F100. The F150 wouldn't fit 3 44gal across the width of the tray whereas the Holden 1 tonner could. So he bought the Holden for increased carrying capacity.

In the Kuwait desert in the 90s, the Toyota 4x4 pickup was the vehicule de choix for the Bedouin who could drive over any, and I mean any, terrain with them. Good to see their choice would still be good nowadays.

Also don't compare these "trucks" by horsepower only, rather torque first, THEN horsepower. The torque is what gets you through day to day and horsepower is what gets you to 160km/h+ and tows big loads.

I am a UK citizen and moved to Thailand and bought the same brand new Toyota Hilux as tested (except only 2 wheel drive) and costs only £18, 500 cash.

The VW Amarok V6 and especially the Mercedes X-Class are on another level of expensive. You can't really compare these two vehicles with other trucks. High end SUV money.
Side note-I still think they're the best looking trucks on the road

Toyota is the best. I bought one few weeks ago and I’m very happy

Would of been nice if you tested the 2019 L200 rather than the outgoing model.

Let's face it, the Hilux will still be running when all the others have been scrapped.

I still refer the old style military version of the unimog with the 6 cylinder motor difflock options, 8 speed gearbox with a forward/ reverse lever. Yes old mogs are a beast but still reliable. Out of the vehicle tests you did there you had a few vehicles missing.
