Today on Trucks! Stacey David addresses the two questions he often gets asked: What is the best vehicle to buy if you're just getting into off-roading and don't want to spend a fortune? And what's the best bargain in a used 4x4?

I had a 78 that I paid $260 for, drove it home and kept it for 9 years. Finally sold it for $300. Biggest mistake I ever made.

This is a throwback. I had an XJ back then, I had paid 4 wheel parts to put on a 3” lift. About 6 months later I wanted more. I remember watching this and thinking “I can do that”. I quickly ordered a 6” Rustys off road lift and spent a Friday night into Saturday morning upgrading my Cherokee with the help of my baby brother and my dads tool box. 20 years later dad still complains that i lost some his tools that night

Now that everyone wants to pull up to the farmers market in their restored FJ/Scout/Bronco etc., these things are a PREMIUM

my favorite 4 wheeler was a 84 grand wagoneer. I love how balanced the ride is, the shorter than typical wheelbase for full size rigs. it was a total pleasure to drive until the vacuum system went out switching the 4wd from the console. I wish I kept that rig. But time moves on. I've had 3 monteros since then and while the montero is a worthy off roader, I really loved the wagoneer body style and ride the most.

This was one of my favorite episodes from Trucks. This rig today is easy 0n the 20K's price range.

Best looking grilles for that series of truck was the wide horizontal grille but with round lights found on 1972-80 models. Had a '78 J-10 short bed Golden Eagle for a while. Classy looking truck.

Here in the UK I have an 83 Cherokee (Laredo) WT. Inhereted from a friend who passed away. Literally "one of a kind" as it is the only FSJ, of that year still registered with DVLA (UK DMV). Also Uber rare as it is properly converted to RHD, instead of the chain drive conversion almost all the UK FSJ's had. Aluminum bumpers, not the nasty chrome plated steel bumpers.
Sitting on my driveway, waiting for a body shop to be brave enough to take it on (and the lottery win to be able to pay for the work!).

Just stumbled upon this episode. How times have changed in the last 20 years. $1500 for the entire truck. In 2022 (if you can still even find one of these things) you can’t even get a rusted out non-roller for under $3k 😅

Miss this show and Stacie's motivation to get out and work on a project.

I have not seen one in that condition for $1500 for a looong time. That is easily a $5000+ Jeep. The first gen Grands (ZJ) though are still plentiful and are the value king for solid axle Jeeps.

They ain't cheap anymore. Good luck finding a rolling chassis for this price.

I remember when off roader's magazine did an article like this about 18 years ago and they listed 10 vehicles that were cheap but had great 4x4 potential. I bought one of the suggested vehicles and even though new/newer vehicles have more creature comforts, I still prefer my 29 year old tank. Like the comments have said, no way in hell you are getting these vehicles cheap anymore.

My girlfriends son in Montana sells parts for these things, you wont believe what he sells the parts for these things for. Theres no LMC truck for a Jeep Wagoneer or J series truck so your stuck with old stuff to recondition, Rust is the biggest issue, you can drop any drivetrain in but the body is the body, rust free sheet metal is hard to find, Restored laler editions Grand Wagoneers fetch 30 40 even 50 grand from places like Wagonmasters in Texas, these are not entry level rigs My girlfriends son has this same vehicle a Golden Eagle same color with a 389 Pontiac V-8 and a turbo 400, its pretty nice.

I had a 79 that same color traded it for a brand new 86 4Runner off the showroom. I am still driving the 4Runner all original except the paint

The old Wagoners and J series were beasts with the 360 in em, sadly their hard to find and fuel mileage wasn't so kind although a 30 gallon fuel tank can solve that

Oh My Goodness, Thank you so much for sharing such a good quality version of the series that got me into vehicles.
I can't begin to express how happy this makes me to watch these again with out relying on my aging video tapes!
