Top 5 UNDERRATED 4x4 utes/pick-ups | ReDriven

The ute/pick-up has become, in 4x4 dual-cab form, one of Australia’s most popular genres of vehicle with the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger consistently topping the highest selling vehicles lists.

But, there are a few models out there that seem to be regularly overlooked, and deserve far more attention than they receive. These aren’t necessarily the best utes or pick ups but on the used market but they’re totally worth a look if you're in the market.

Let us know your thoughts in the comments below and don't forget to subscribe to stay up to date with all our latest content!

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.

Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.

Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.

So we want to hear your thoughts. Hit us up in the comments, or on Instagram and Facebook.

We’d love nothing more than for you to give us as much feedback as possible, so we can make this channel the best it can be.

I bought a mahindra for work, It goes good. I'm in civil construction and we put manholes, concrete pipes or a water tank on it and it's never skipped a beat

Have had 2 Mahindras, 1st for 12 years, never had a problem, unlike some ranger owners I know

I’ve owned a 2021 Dmax Xterrain for nearly 12 months and used it for towing, little bit of off-road and driving to work and Overall ver pleased. It goes in for a service next week and I’m getting the new factory release towing update which should make things easier when towing. We have a 2.9ton caravan and I’m surprised how well it tows the van. Well after I updated the rear suspension it does.

Ive had the Actyon Sports since new. It cost $35k drive away with towbar and canopy. At 200, 000 km it's been crashed and had a whole new front, on an off road, towed anything and everything and beyond normal service items, only needed a $100 cam sensor. Honestly, it's the best value vehicle I've ever owned.

Brumby is a great choice for number 1!
I used to have a 1985 Touring Wagon that essentially had the same running gear as the Brumby, and it was awesome.
Would love to see a modern take on the old Brumby. That would be VERY interesting.

If the Mahindra does whatever you need and you're not fussed about living in the lap of luxury, you'd be bonkers NOT to get one on pure economics alone.
Isuzu d-max are everywhere in Thailand and compete with the more expensive Toyota and Fords. The old ones lack uumph and put out more soot than a steam train (model/year dependent lack of DPF ).

Had Ssangyongs in the mines, they proved to be one of the most reliable utes we used.

If Subaru made a modern version of a brumby I'd be very interested. Something that drives like a car but has the benefits of a 4x4 ute. Could even do an STI rally version

Love the brumby, Subaru fan, always wanted one, bit hard to come by and prices are getting up a little. Who knows maybe a project one day. Great work AK.

The Subaru pickup sold like hot cakes in the UK during the 1980’s and I’m sure it still would do. The one ton dual cab pickups that tow 3.5 tons are great for people who need them but there is a massive hole in the market for smaller pickups these days and a pent-up demand from traders, farmers both large and small and many other sectors.

Yep. Gotta love the Brumby. I'd prefer it over a 120 grand yank tank that we are seeing more of on our roads.
Got a request AK. Can you do a review of reliable, cheap first cars for teenagers?

Still keenly waiting on the Dmax and Colorado reviews. Also interested in what you lot do with a Great Wall, hard to argue with the price of one.
I wouldnt call the GU Ute underrated, but definitely underappreciated, and a TD4.2 at barely worn in.
Keep up the great work lads! Love to hear you pick apart shit that is shit, and praise what they've done good. Good to see a review channel actually pick apart the vehicles instead of just waffling on

Loved it. Brumby hard to come by but was really awesome in its time. Definitely need an update for this vehicle.
