I’ve been knitting on and teaching it for at least 50 years and you taught me a new twist. Thanks.

I used the long tail cast on for years--that is what my mother showed me as I learned to knit. Then, as an adult, she showed me the knitted on cast on, which I've used ever since. I learned another version, where you knit BETWEEN the previous two stitches on your needle, instead of INTO the previous stitch, for a stretchier cast on. At some point, someone told me that that was called the cable cast on.

Thank you for sharing this cast on. I used this when I was learning to knit but then someone showed me the Cable cast on and I went with that then I learnt the long tail cast on and use that. Good to see an old friend that I had forgotten about though. Thank you for your visit.

So interesting! I was taught to do method 2 as a child and never knew there was any other way until recently with the advent of YouTubers and the long tail - whaaaat??!!!! I had to try it but for crying out loud I had either miscalculated to have miles of tail yarn left over and wasted or not enough to make it and had to start again, sheesh! Who said this was better? I thought I had been doing it all wrong all those years (40+) 😝 thanks to you I’m learning new tricks about ALL the ways, advantages & disadvantages, etc. Thanks so much Roxanne.

Hi Roxanne. Great video. I have always used the second method when using the knitted cast on. I’ve seen people do it using method 1 but it seems so odd to me. I’m sure it’s just because of always used method 2 but most often use the LTCO. Thanks for the comparison of each method. 😊

The first cast-on that I've learned! Specifically Method 1. I sometimes do Method 2 instead by mistake.

Not my go to cast-on though. I find it be not stretchy. I could make it stretchier by knitting it loosely (or casting-on a larger needle) but then it ends up looking really sloppy, though I don't really mind. I really just not prefer to do it because it is kinda cumbersome and slow to cast-on but without having any significant advantages over other cast-ons.

As a crocheter too, this cast on, specifically Method 1, essentially looks to me just like a (crochet) chain and then working on the top loops of the chain.

Can you purl the knitted on stitches instead either just to have the other side towards you or to be in pattern for a two by two rib?

Can you do these two variations with the cable cast and on? Will the effects be negligible like with the knitted cast on?

Is this a good cast on for a top down sock?

wonder how similar knit cast on is compared with cable cast on?
