Back on release, keeping the Canon skellies was how i near always guaranteed keeping a fort. Even as a sloop against galleons. That many canons and sneaky gunpowder deliveries were just too hard for the larger and slower turning ship to handle

Keeping all your kegs in a pile on the island is also a decent option.

You can use them against the boss and against people attacking, and if you want them gone, they can be cleared in one shot.
I've killed people while they were scrambling for their keg pile by shooting it of course, but that's not a major setback.
