Republic sounds good to me ... Removes the risk of individuals of being abused by the majority

Fun fact: the disadvantage of a republic (too much debate and deadlock) is what the founding father's wanted.

Constitutional Republic for me, which is what our US government has been since the Founding Fathers time.

He adds a lot of things onto the definition of Republic that aren't actually part of the definition of Republic. Many republics have the laws and protections that he talks about, but if you take those away they do not cease to be a republic. For example, freedom of religion had to be added to the constitution in the bill of rights. That doesn't mean that the nation wasn't a republic before the 1st amendment was adopted.

We Do Not live in a democracy.
We live in a Constitutional Republic.
It's important to know the difference.

In a democracy, the sovereignty is in the whole body of the citizens. The sovereignty is not divided to smaller units such as individual citizens. To solve a problem, only the whole body politic is authorized to act. Also, being citizens, individuals have duties and obligations to the government. The governments only obligations to the citizens are those legislatively pre-defined for it by the whole body politic.

In a Republic, the sovereignty resides in the Free People themselves, whether one or many. In a Republic, one may act on his/her own or through representatives as they choose to solve a problem. Further, the People have no obligation to the government; instead, the government being hired by the People, is obliged to its owner, We the People. (See 10th Amendment if you do not know.)

“A Constitutional Republic” is a government created and controlled, at least, by the Law of a Constitution.
(See Article IV, Section 4)

The Constitution of the United States of America was, in Law, foundationally based on the Bible, the Magna Carta, and the Declaration of Independence. Those documents known as the Charters of Freedom, recognize mans sovereignty, the Divine nature of mans creation and mans divine right to Life, Liberty, Property, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

(Our Constitution was made only for a Moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.)

I have a LOT of issues with this video and the message it entails
1) I believe that the issue itself just stems from the fact that that the 2 parties are called democratic/republican, because this discussion existst only in the US
2) This is probably the worst part of this video: your definition of democracy is mob rule and your definition of republic is just a democracy with a constitution (which does NOT equal a republic I'll explain this in the next point)
3) You also fail to differentiate between system of governence (i.e. how the country is run ex: representative/presidencial democracy etc.) from forms of state (ex: republic, monarchy etc.) if you look at france, you'll see that it's a democracy and a republic, sweden on the other hand is a democracy and a kingdom (both have a constitution that protect property rights and minorities) and belarus is a republic and a dictatorship. Yes, a country can be a republic AND a dictatorship.

My understanding was that a republic is best represented by the senate, where regions get representation regardless of population while a democracy is best represented by the house where you get representation based on population.

The US republic while imperfect keeps improving. The nature of government is that power shifts and being a republic protects the people from changes in the majority. The most important part of the US republic is that there are three independent, co-equal branches along with the bi-cameral legislature which is designed to impede the passage of laws.

Is that not a Constitutional Republic? Can’t there be a Constitutional Democracy? I feel like this video does not explain a republic in its base foundation like was explained democracy. Republic definition: is “state in which supreme power resets in the people via elected representatives”. Now a democracy: government by the people, system of government in which the sovereign power is vested in the people as a whole exercising power directly or by elected officials”. In a republic the elected officials have more power in a democracy the elected officials are bound to what they were elected for. I dislike the overlap of a representative democracy and a republic because they are not the same.

Most democracies have a strong constitution. So I would say that's where all th minorities get their rights protected.

I believe that majority should still have more power but that the minority should be protected. BTW thanks so much for the unbiased explanation and great job at explaining.

I love they claim a republic protects the "minority" don't explain how!!
A republic...nay a constitutional republic IS a democracy.
Tell any office elected by the minority?? Any office!

After watching several vids on this subject I notice that there's a common belief that democracy = majoritism. This is plainly not the case. Just from logic if the people are sovereign why would they accept that the 51% can persecute the 49% ? Which implies a rule-book (constitution) which this vid also seems to deny. From this there is a requirement for legal equality if one vote is equivalent to another - so all the tyranny of the majority arguments have to be hyperbole. There is no pure democracy definition because it arises as an alternative to authority of the few not as a settled doctrine, Republic much the same.

Surely the US leans more towards a democratic republic what with the fact that the constitution has been subject to contunied editing/amendment. That's how republics degrade/devolve into democracies right? The rules keep changing, and over a long enough period of time the 'rule of law' is essentially disrespected and disregarded so much by constant alteration of the rules to pander to the current 'majority' that it ends up being completely written off in favor of a democracy, which then inevitably leads to a contry cannibalizing itself.
