Why Doctor Who is Good Again: A Deep Dive into the Reboot

Alright Whovians, if you haven’t watched Doctor Who in a few years it might just be time to hop back in the TARDIS (but also go back and watch the old seasons if you can....especially Peter Capaldi’s seasons, don’t sleep on 12!!) I was admittedly super nervous when I heard they were trying a soft reboot of the show, I didn’t want any big changes. But this reboot did everything right and more. So here’s a maybe too deep analysis of why the show works again (and why you should definitely watch!)

This video was made right after episode 7 so contains spoilers up until that point and does not contain any analysis or spoilers of the finale!

Music:
Song: Nettson - Last Promise
Song: Keys Of Moon - White Petals
Track: "Evolution", Sharp Motif
Track: "A Gentleman's Resolve", Sister of the Quill
Track: "Unpractical Jokes"

If my biggest problem with this new series is that it’s too short and I want more of it, it’s doing something right (except the episode count… seriously bring it back to 10! That’s long enough!)

Jodi was done dirty by the last writer. In saying that - 14 finally getting to return to a "home" life like he hasn't had in the 60+ years of the show was so satisfying.
As for these later episodes, seems like their still finding their feet. Loved the dot and rogue episodes, goblins were so-so in finding out they're expanding to supernatural now.

Can someone explain to me why Dan was even needed in the final season of Thirteen?
It seemed like they were terrified of even the idea of leaving Yasmin alone with Thirteen.
And to be honest, I personally think that Chibnall shouldn't have taken on the concept of multiple Doctor companions in the first place, because he obviously doesn't know how to work with it. Yasmin alone would be enough for me personally.

My brother and I have watched from 11 (and since caught up with 9 and 10) to today and this season we've kept saying to each other, "oh, _this_ is what it's like to be excited about Doctor Who again!" We're actually talking about the episodes the same day they air, and then the next day, and then we theorize all week long... something we never, ever bothered doing during 13's run.

I just watched the Angels Take Manhattan for the first time.

Sad to see the Ponds go...

Started with Ninth Doctor back in November and have been addicted.

Not actually watching this video, just wanted to share my love of Doctor Who.

I’m a first time doctor who watcher and a musician and I am OBSESSED with the devil’s chord episode. The Doctor’s “I thought that was non-diegetic” line had me CACKLING.

This season is an enigma to me. Every episode I come away with problems and yet I’m still enjoying it and looking forward to the finale. Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson are both incredible actors with fantastic chemistry. Hopefully they’ll be able to iron out some of the issues next season, mainly regarding pacing and characterization.

I think Chibnall thought of the three companion model from some of Classic Who like the Fifth Doctor‘s adventures. The problem is that those episodes back then were structured differently split into multiple short parts which allowed story telling with so many companions. Modern episodes length and episode numbering doesn’t allow for that. This is why two companions are the maximum in NewWho.
And apparently we will see that dynamic again in season 2 (without a white male companion this time) so I’m excited for that!

Oh my dear, it's Doctor Who. It's endured losing it's 1st actor (you know they pulled regeneration straight out of their butts back then, don't you?), it endured a doctor that lasted for 7 seasons, so far the longest and because of that he became the literal face of Doctor Who for a very long time. It endured being gone for big time periods. It endured two tries at "Americanizing" it. No matter what, Doctor Who endures. it's something more than just your average franchise. it's an icon and a legacy. And it's the first science fiction to get the whole problem with time travel right - well, in a science fiction sort of way. (Time and RELATIVE DIMENSION in Space is really important if you're going to travel through time.) I remember when everyone thought it was over when Christopher Eccleston left. The outcry broke the internet twice. Then David Tenant came on with that hair and the rest is history. My point it I am not concerned that Doctor Who will be going away any time soon. I've been at this geek stuff for a very long time and I've heard many people say things would go away. You should have seen how much science fiction was dismissed before Star Wars dropped. According to everyone back then, science fiction was a dying genre. And now, here we are. Isn't it glorious?

10:08 this scene broke my heart, and not just because Clara’s Theme is Murray Gold’s best composition

9:57 THIS WAS ME when it was used in The Star Beast. It may be a more 11th Doctor-associated track but The Doctor is still The Doctor. Every Doctor deserves that triumphant backing

14:00 this is why I think they introduced Rory as a side character in The Eleventh Hour and not a main companion. It gave Amy and the Doctor the time to legitimately bond before throwing Rory into the mix. Rory isn't a main companion until like 3/4 of the way through the season, and I don't think Arthur Darvill was in the opening credits until season 6. The Doctor needs time to bond with 1 companion and establish a dynamic before throwing more companions into the mix

You are soooo right about the music. One thing that made me love Doctor Who is Murray Gold's music, I never felt that much emotion while listening to music before. I actually enjoy writing to his music.
I never quite put my finger on what was bothering me in the latest seasons, I didn't know Murray Gold left but now it all makes sense :D

Love all of your analysis, I'm really enjoying this new season (and the Ruby's theme is amazing) !
