How To Properly Watch Doctor Who

Doctor Who is undoubtedly full of crazy adventures thanks to the Tardis. But, for a show focused on time-travel, is watching the episodes in order really the best way to experience it? And Is following the Doctor even really the best option when it’s their companions who are the true driving force of the show? They’re the ones who act as the Doctor’s moral compass and are meant the be the audience’s gateway into the show after all. Plus, with so many different point of views presented throughout the series that each offer vastly different experiences, it would be a shame to limit yourself to only one.

When you watch the series from the eyes of River’s, Clara’s, Captain Jack Harkness, or Sarah Jane Smith you get to see an entirely different story start to unfold -- one completely unlike the one that a straight forward viewing would present (sometimes even featuring other shows!). So, whether you are coming into the series for the first time or are looking to have that long awaited rewatch again, here’s why you shouldn’t go from the beginning of the Ninth Doctor to the latest episode of the Thirteenth. Instead, try mixing up the timeline -- after all, as we all know, time’s not really a straight line but more of a ball of wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff!

I absolutely disagree with not watching rivers arc in the wrong order. The directors knew what they were doing, and all though it would make more sense that way, it would be much less entertaining

I disagree mostly. Watching along River's timeline, or even Claras, is more of a 2nd or 3rd rewatch thing. You don't fully comprehend what's going on until you know the context of what's happening around the character.

I'd certainly start at Rose and continue on from there. Most seasons follow one or two companions and so you get the "Story of the companion" alongside The Doctors experiences.

I mean for series 7, the whole mystery box of the “impossible girl” is the crux of the series, so it doesn’t really make sense for a first time viewer to watch that way and kill the mystery. On rewatch maybe? But first time, not so much. Same for River

I mean maybe this has merit as a rewatch method but as a way to get into the series, ruining series long arcs by seeing their payoffs early just for the sake of “seeing it in the order the companions did”… madness.

Edit: You said Torchwood never leaves the UK, but series 4 takes places mostly in the USA. Also his name isn't Lanto, its Ianto. (I can't quite remember the spelling, so my apologies if I'm wrong.)

Except the whole of River Song is that she’s designed to be a mystery that you uncover as you watch through the show from the beginning. It’s like saying you should start watching a mystery movie with the last scene because then you’ll know what’s been going on the whole time

Sorry but this is bollacks I always watch Doctor who in order from 2005-present.

I always still get the wonder and get extra lore and meaning from it.

It would be weird to do it from a companions perspective and would not work with River’s point of view at all.

Also u got rivers timeline wrong ngl.
