I am 19 and have been scared of getting a credit card for a while, since I felt like I can somehow pay for everything with debit. However I realized that I can use credit just fine as long as I handle it responsibly, so I am studying credit cards a lot to make sure I don't make any mistakes. Responsibility is key. I used to pay the outstanding balance in fear, also not understanding why my credit score was so bad but then I started only paying a little over the statement balance only because I quit my job at the time and BOOM my credit score became so good lol
