In this video, Dr. Berg talks about dietary proteins and gout. Uric acid is a byproduct of protein and when it gets too high in the blood, it can precipitate out and settle into certain joints that could cause various inflammation. The real problem with gout is that you are not able to eliminate the uric acid which means the problem is with the kidneys.
Foods High in Purines
• Organ meats
• Veal
• Turkey
• Venison
• Sardines/Fish

Facts about Uric Acid
1. Over 60% of uric acid in the body comes from your own body and NOT in the diet.
2. 90% of people with gout have the problem of eliminating uric acid and only 10% produce too much uric acid.

Why uric acid spike while doing the ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting?
• It spikes only on a temporary basis and goes away after the adaptation process because uric acid is a major antioxidant made internally to help clean up and heal certain things in the body.

Instant Remedy for Gout. After you sleep, before you drink anything, rub generous amounts of your Saliva on the affected joints. This melts the Uric Acid instantly! Instant Pain Relief! You only have to do this a time or two before you don't have anymore Gout Pain.
Learning about the cause of Gout is very interesting, Thank you for sharing.

Dehydration!! Drink plenty of water with a.cider vinegar, baking soda and lemon. I have never drunk enough water and when I fast, my body has become even more acidic. As a result, I now have gout attacks on my fingers. I started drinking a lot of water and now I feel much healthier.

Great video. Back in the day, I used to get gout flare-ups, especially after eating liver, but back then I was an overweight blimp eating a typical high carb, high sugar crap diet. After adapting more of a keto diet and dropping a lot of weight, I've not had any gout flare-ups while eating good amounts of organ meats.

Did you actually read my comment/video suggestion from 3 months ago? This is exactly what I wanted to know more about. Thanks Berg!

Dr Eric, there's a nice NHANES paper on uric acid levels between quintiles of protein intake. Difference only occurs between the 1st and 5th quintile of protein intake. However, it's an FFQ study.

Potassium definitely works on uric acid, it also helps the kidneys function better.
I got gout last year, first time, even though my uric acid was always over .5 for 30 years.
Talk about hell, couldn't walk for a week and it took like 4-5 months after that to fully leave the big toe joint.
I have always been a pretty big drinker, beer and wine.
You wouldn't wish gout on your worst enemy.

The worst of carbs is fructose.
This type of sugar is mostly processed in the liver, meaning it doesn't give the muscles the energy they need, as glucose does.
When it is digested, it release toxins similar to alcohol, which cause major problems in the body.
It is found in sugar, honey, and HFCS.
Fruits also contain this type of sugar, but the antioxidants present in fruits help heal any problem fructose would create in the body.
The best fruits low in fructose are berries, which are also high in fiber, most antioxidants, and usually the highest protein/carb ratio among fruits.
Fructose from processed foods leads to higher tryglycerides in the body, therefore it raises cholesterol, it raises uric acid, destroys the way you metabolize food ( you get fat despite a low-calorie intake ), raises leptin levels, as a carb it makes you retain water, in the long term it can cause diabetes, gout etc.
I was able to eat a 4000 calorie/day diet without getting fat, all by avoiding fructose.

I suffer with gout. This video makes perfect sense; thanks very much. Since I moved to a whole food, plant based diet in January, I haven't had any gout attacks! NO sugar or refined grains and intermittent fasting a few days per week.

Some people will take a quarter teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) in 8 oz of water to alkaline the kidneys 4 times a day while fasting along with taking one eight of a teaspoon of potassium chloride powder that stays in the body longer than potassuium citrate. Take baking soda an hour and a half away from meals to not neutralize stomach acid and digestion.

My mom was giving the proscription fructose for her, after 3 years using fructose as medicine, she died with kidney failure and gout. I was suffering from not knowing what went wrong and now I know the truth and cause.

High Cortisol breaks down Proteins that go through the liver in a process called Deamination = breakdown of Amino Acids into Ammonia+Carbon Skeleton+Hydrogen Ion. Ammonia turns into Urea then into Uric Acid and if there is IR the kidneys don't work properly and it can't be eliminated. The combination of Stress + High Carb Diet supercharges this situation. People that follow a healthy Keto + IF eating plan have a lot less symptoms (or none at all) coming from chronic stress. See Dr. Berg, I've paid attention in all your other videos ! :)

about 30 years ago my Doctor said my uric acid was way too high after a blood test. Now I can tell by the comments that you all do not think much of doctors, but mine prescribed zyloprim and here it is 30 some odd years later and not a hint of gout, ever. By the way I tried a Keto diet last year and the oxylates in the spinach (which I've always hated) almost destroyed my kidneys, they still under perform and probably always will. I just hope to avoid dialysis at this point. So I guess the body knows what it doesn't want, but can be over-ridden by the brain and poor choices are made.

you are correct but after getting a gout attack due to high carb, you have to be careful with ANY combination of carbs and protein, for example, almost any beer and steak dinner can cause another attack...so IF and Keto is great to stop gout attacks but still too much meat is a concern

Cutting back on Alcohol and glucose in the form of sugars and HF corn syrup is helping. A 5 day regimen of Colchicine has helped me a lot during flare ups. Keep the meds handy and lead a normal life in moderation.
