CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rudy (Sean Astin) goes to his first Notre Dame football practice where he is pummeled.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A young man learns to let nothing stop him from realizing his ambitions in this drama, based on a true story. Ever since he was a little boy, Rudy Ruettiger (Sean Astin) has dreamed of attending Notre Dame University, and playing on the Fighting Irish football team. However, Rudy's dream doesn't seem very practical; Daniel (Ned Beatty), his father, works in a steel mill and can ill afford to send his son to Notre Dame, while Rudy's grades are not especially impressive, and standing a shade over five feet tall and weighing a little over 100 pounds, Rudy is hardly built for the gridiron. However, with the help of Father Cavanaugh (Robert Prosky), a sympathetic priest, Rudy is admitted to nearby Holy Cross, and in his junior year manages to squeak into Notre Dame as a transfer student. Rudy works as an assistant to the football stadium's groundskeeper, Fortune (Charles S. Dutton), to pay his tuition (often sleeping in Fortune's office since he can't afford a room), studies diligently, and appears at tryouts for the football team. Rudy is made a member of the practice team, which means he's little more than a human tackling dummy, but Coach Ara Parseghian (Jason Miller) is impressed with Rudy's devotion and determination, and pledges that he'll allow him to dress for one game before he graduates, so his name can be recorded as an official member of the team. However, the arrival of a new coach and a tough season that allows for few unnecessary players may put a stop to Rudy's dreams within sight of the finish line. Rudy also stars Jon Favreau, Lili Taylor, and Scott Benjaminson.

As a great coach once said:
I'm not looking for the best players, I'm looking for the right ones.'

If you're a tough guy & you play Defense, One thing you learn quick is the Pulling Guard. Good luck Gents!

Never made it to the next level....high school was my limit. This scene however reminds me of my freshman year serving time on scrub D during Varsity practice while the first team offense of seniors and juniors ran the upcoming game plan against us. Being 5'9", barely 120 lbs playing corner...defending a tall sweep with two pulling guards, two lead blockers and then the ball carrier...all of which doubled my weight easily...it was hard to imagine even calling that practice for them. Certainly puts "shake down the thunder from the sky" in perspective!!!

Rudy was the guy you built a team around. He was there to help the team in ways they never knew. He made them play better and harder and faster but mostly PROUDER.

This clip doesn't show it, but I love the way Rudy gets right back up when the pulling guard shellacks him for embarrassing him in front of the coach.

1. I always liked how the film showed other dudes getting run over. Not to demean Rudy's efforts, but yeah pretty much EVERYBODY on the practice squad gets crushed.

2. Fun fact for those of you who don't know, the most famous player to come out of Notre Dame this season was NOT Rudy Ruettiger...it was Joe freakin Montana

3. Rudy was 27 when he played against GA Tech

4. Dear god, did NOBODY EVER teach Rudy that the first rule of football, ESPECIALLY if you're a lineman, is to STAY LOW!?!?! Standing up straight as a pencil, you're just BEGGING to be pancaked!
