What’s the Rudy movie about?
A young man learns to let nothing stop him from realizing his ambitions in this drama, based on a true story. Rudy (Sean Astin from The Lord of The Rings) dreams of attending Notre Dame University, and playing on the Fighting Irish football team. However, Rudy's dream doesn't seem very practical; his father works in a steel mill and can ill afford to send his son to Notre Dame, while Rudy's grades are not especially impressive, and standing a shade over five feet tall and weighing a little over 100 pounds, Rudy is hardly built for the gridiron. However, with the help of Father Cavanaugh (Robert Prosky), Rudy is admitted to Holy Cross, and in his junior year manages to squeak into Notre Dame as a transfer student. Rudy works as an assistant to the football stadium's groundskeeper to pay his tuition and appears at tryouts for the football team. Rudy is made a member of the practice team but Coach Ara Parseghian (Jason Miller) is impressed with Rudy's devotion and determination, and pledges that he'll allow him to dress for one game before he graduates, so his name can be recorded as an official member of the team. However, the arrival of a new coach and a tough season that allows for few unnecessary players may put a stop to Rudy's dreams within sight of the finish line.

I can associate this movie on many levels. I was a lean, smaller guy in football but I always hit harder and faster than guys bigger than me. I loved to hit and there was no better feeling to hit an opponent right as the ball was coming to them from a pass and make them fumble or, drop the pass, or intercept a pass and run for a touchdown.

In real life, it was Devine’s idea to let Rudy play in the final few snaps. This movie made him out to be the antagonist when he was one of the biggest protagonist of the real saga.

"Your an an All American and our Captain. Act like it"
"I Believe I am"
*lays jersey down*
*knock*
"Me too coach*
This movie makes me cry at multiple points.

Fun fact: while this is a nice dramatic scene in the movie, in real life this never happened. It was actually the coaches idea to let Rudy make the dress.

Good god, that walk up to practice…never quit ever. I hear that Goldsmith theme in my head when life gets hard. Just get to your damn feet and move your ass! Good things will happen.

Coach Devine of course watched Rudy like we all did and was quoted as saying “If one of my players was dumb enough to hand over his jersey, he’d never get it back from me.”

The players never put their jerseys down in reality but regardless, it was one of the best scenes. I think with movies, even true life stories, you expect some fictionalization. The same happened with The Blind Side

I know everyone loves to point out that this didn't happen, but nonetheless it's great usage of poetic/creative license.

In real life this didn’t happen. No player in his right mind would intentionally give up his last home game for someone else. I understand it’s a humbling Hollywood moment, but think logically.
