Why Do My Joints Hurt?
When you have an injury to a particular joint, you usually know how it happened: playing sports, a fall, an auto accident.
But when a lot of your joints hurt at the same time, the cause can be something of a mystery. There are more than 100 types of diseases, disorders and conditions that can cause joint pain. This video lists and describes the most common.
Certain illnesses cause temporary joint and muscle pain. The flu and other respiratory infections, for example, cause inflammation in muscles and joints. However, this achy discomfort goes away when the underlying illness goes away.
Other reasons for joint pain that will stay with you for a longer period of time include he following.
Bursitis, tendinitis etc Joints are complicated mechanical structures that incude not only solid bone, but also soft tissue like cartilage, ligaments, tendons and bursae. These may require a long time to heal if they've been damaged in ways that don't necessarily include traumatic injuries. You can cause inflammation in these tissues by overworking them: doing the same motion repetitively to long, pushing, pulling, or lifting something that's too heavy, or stretching them beyond their range of otion.
Joints also hurt because of ongoing medical conditions caused by inflammation. Various forms of arthritis lead the list in this category. Three of the most common are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.
Osteoarthritis The cartilage or cushion between joints breaks down leading to pain, stiffness and swelling.
Rheumatoid arthritis This is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks your own body's tissues. It's different from osteoarthritis because it affects the lining of your joints, causing swelling that may result in bone erosion and even joint deformity.
Gout Gout is characterized by sudden, severe pain, swelling, redness and tenderness, often in the joint at the base of the big toe. It's caused by an accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints.
Other common causes of joint pain include the following.
Certain infectious diseases, including mumps and hepatitis.
Bone Infection (Osteomyelitis) A bone infection may occur when bacteria or fungi invade the bone, causing many symptoms, including fever, redness, stiffness, and swelling.
Fibromyalgia is a long term or chronic disorder. It’s associated with widespread pain in the muscles and bones, along with areas of tenderness, and general fatigue.
Lupus. Lupus is a systemic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and can affect joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs.
Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a debilitating disorder characterized by extreme tiredness that can't be explained by an underlying medical condition.
IBD comprises a group of disorders like ulcerative colitis that affect the gastrointestinal tract. Joint pain and swelling may be among the symptoms.
Lyme disease This is an infectious disease that's transmitted to humans through tick bites.
The purpose of this video has been to provide quick, basic information about the most common reasons your joints may hurt.
