Why Do My Joints And Bones Hurt?

Joints and bones in your body are likely to hurt due to injuries or disorders in the bones and joints themselves, or in the muscles and tissues that connect them.

These bones, joints and connective tissues are collectively known as your musculoskeletal system.

Pain in the musculoskeletal system can range from mild to severe, and from temporary to chronic. Pain may occur in a small, specific area, or it may be widespread (or "diffuse"). Sometimes pain originating in connective structures near the joint, such as ligaments, tendons, and bursae, seems to be coming from the joints or bones themselves.

Causes of joint and bone pain often include one, or a combination of, the following.

Bone pain usually results from an injury, such as might occur in a vehicle accident, a fall, or a collision while playing sports. Bone pain is usually deep and penetrating. Other less common causes of bone pain include bone infection (osteomyelitis), hormone disorders, and tumors.

Muscle pain, which doctors call "myalgia," can result from a muscle spasm or cramp, commonly called a charley horse. Pain can occur when a muscle is affected by an injury, loss of blood flow to the muscle, infection, or a tumor.

Pain that occurs in or around a joint is most likely to be caused by the following.

Arthritis, which is caused by inflammation, is one of the most common causes of joint discomfort. Arthritis may also cause swelling. There are a number of different types of arthritis, including

* Osteoarthritis,

* Inflammatory arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis,

* Infectious arthritis,

* Gout

* Autoimmune disorders, such as lupus

Arthritis pain almost always feels worse when you move the affected joint, but you can also feel it even when it's not being moved.

Tendon and ligament pain is typically less intense than bone pain. It hurts most when the affected tendon or ligament is stretched or moved, but feels better with rest. Common causes of tendon pain include tendinitis, and tendon injuries, which sometimes occur due to strain or repetitive overuse.

Trauma, overuse, gout, or infection can also trigger pain in the bursae, the small fluid-filled sacs that provide a protective cushion around joints. This type of pain is known as bursitis, and in addition to discomfort, it can also cause swelling in the affected area.

Fibromyalgia is another type of muscloskeletal disorder that can cause pain in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments. Symptoms include discomfort or tenderness in multiple locations. An individual with fibromyalgia usually has other symptoms, such as fatigue and poor sleep.

Nerve damage or compression is another source of musculoskeletal pain. Such pain radiates along the nerve path and may include burning. tingling, or numbness. Carpal tunnel syndrome, which affects the area around the wrists, is one of the most common of such conditions.

In some circumstances, pain that seems to be musculoskeletal in origin actually originates with a disorder in a nearby organ. For example, arm pain may be a symptom of an impending a heart attack. Shoulder pain may be caused by a disorder affecting the lungs, spleen, or gallbladder. Back pain may be caused by a kidney or pancreas problems.
