Timing chain tensioner on its way out. Chain will rattle at cold start and will eventually snap guides due to excessive play. I think problem starts due to a drop in oil pressure. If you plug it into a code reader you’re likely to get a Vanos selonoid fault. Change the chain and tensioner now to avoid expensive repairs..

Hy,

So what was the source of the problem ? ... did you have to change/clean the exaust solenoid ? ... I am facing the same problem on my 116i (same N13 engine) and belive it or not your short video is the only one on youtube regarding this bmw engine with this problem.

I'm geting: (used carly on obd2 port)

Fault: VANOS, outlet: control error, position not reached
- Code: 130308 (same as the classic P0015)
- Fault: Charge pressure control, shutdown: pressure build-locked (This is generated by the first fault)
- Code: 120408

From what I understand 90% of the time the problem is caused by:

- Contaminated oil passage at VANOS solenoid valve
- Oil pressure too low
- Defective wires or plug terminals on VANOS solenoid valve
- VANOS solenoid valve seized
- VANOS solenoid valve defective

The main reason people have this problem is because the tend to change the oil beyond 10.000 km ....

I'm going to try to fix this problem next month and I'm adding as much info on this as I can ... Any help would be apreciated.

I went at the bmw dealer service and they told me that the valve train timing chain needs to be replaced. I don't belive them, there is no rattle on the chain and the car has only 65.000 km on board.

The car shows a "drivetrain malfunction error" after first start in the morning and this results in limp mode. After Engine stop and restarting the engine the car is perfectly drivable.

hi guys i forgot to follow up it cleared for a few months after oil flushing etc. ( never use flush agent as it dislodges too much and can cause seal damage) after a few months it jammed again was intake side vanos actuator i replaced. BMW were not able to repair under warranty of course as fault intermittent lol so he paid me as was out of warranty
