How to replace Vanos Solenoid BMW N52 / N54 Engine

Показать описание

The VANOS units are located on the front of the cylinder head and have the unique function of making small adjustments to the intake and exhaust camshafts while they are rotating in a running engine. The BMW VANOS units make these "variable" adjustments to the spinning camshafts in a very clever way; they harness hydraulic oil pressure to move a splined plunger gear back and forth on the end of the camshaft. When the splined plunger gear is extended, the camshaft timing is advanced slightly creating "valve overlap" and a more efficient running motor. When the splined plunger is retracted, the timing is retarded creating more engine power.
Use only original BMW part as the other brands part may not be working properly.

Love how straightforward this is. No introductions or unnecessary jibber jabber. Just show what needs to be done. Great!

Great video, but for those attempting to do this: it’s not always as easy as it looks on this video.

I replaced the solenoids on 2 of my cars. A Z4 coupe and E60 530i on the Z4 it went relatively easy, on the E60 it was an absolute nightmare. It took me hours to get the bottom solenoid in. Used oil to lubricate, tried the old rubber o-ring, nothing helped. Ended up removing the metal piece that go over the radiator to get a bit more leverage, still a nightmare tho.

On my E46 M52tü I replaced the VANOS seals + rattle bearings and although way more steps in that process, I would rather do that again then ‘just’ changing the solenoids on N52

I would like to add, that sometimes the new vanos does not go in! When the engine is old, there will be corrosion on the flange/hole, where the vanos valve goes in. So in order to get it done, you need to take a small piece of sanding paper (200) and sand the round hole, so that it is smooth again. Before you put in the new part, you should also remove the new rubber seal from the vanos, and place it into the hole on the engine. Then lubricate the new vanos part and slide it in like pro. Thank me later ;-).

great vid... though i'd add one minor step and give the electrical plugin a good shot of cleaner when you first disconnect - it'll be dry a few minutes later

So i had a p0015 code for a bmw e60 n52 btw the car leaked oil and was driven on empty it stalled no warning light on dash and the on board computer showed oil level was ok hence never needed to top up only to find out there was no oil and bmw dosent have a dipstick to check, after the car stalled had it towed back put new oil in and oil filter and got p0015 code care cranks but does not start, removed both vanos Solenoids cleaned them, tested them both made the click sounds tested with multimeter both worked too, then tested the wiring harness it was getting 5.6volts so there was power to the solenoids i put them back in after spraying with Air intake cleaner, the car still doesn’t start, new codes p0010 and p0013, cranks but no start

many thanks for the short yet so clear video, is it the same orientation of vanos on an N45N /316i european E90 sedan? you made look quite easy to replace, as for my sons E90 he has same symptoms as in video, but better diagnose first to make sure, and please advice if cleaning them would do the engine any better, cheers

Hi, I'm preparing to "test" the state of VANOS solenoids by removing and cleaning them and I'll get new ones if they are faulty.
Is there any pre-removal procedure to do (like there is with the valvetronic motor for example)??
Thanks :)

Is engine oil required to be removed prior to removal and then installation of vanos solinoid

what could a faulty solenoid do, because i got a code that i have a fault on my solenoid and i was wondering, is it the reason my car has bad fuel consumption and my car feels slower like throttle response is bad
