As a RDN myself, I'd say you summed everything up well. You have a thumbs up from me.

I just graduated with my Bachelors degree in Microbiology and Cell Science. I was thinking of either becoming a Nutritionist or a Physician Assistant. I like the idea of being a Nutritionist because I don't want to be the type of provider that just pushes pills down ppls throats. I think that Doctors don't want Dietitians to intervene because the patient will actually improve off of just eating better and thus have more confidence in the Dietitian. Medicine seems to be more concerned with treating as opposed to preventing and curing.

If I did choose to go the Nutritionist route, I'd probably still get a PA degree or PhD in Nutrition. Great video btw.

As a dietitian I have to say that at the beginning I was stressing a lot, but after half a year I was okay.

At the hospital I work at, I can order supplements like pro-stat and nepro without permission from a doctor or nurse. At During one of my clinical rotations, RDs could change a diet but only to a more strict version (for example, regular to mechanical soft but not the other way around). However, I can't change diet orders where I work and I agree with you that we should be able to considering we have the most expertise out of any other healthcare professionals when it comes to nutrition.

Thanks for this video! Very informative. There are so many different pros & cons. I agree that not having the autonomy to place patients on supplements or changing their diet makes absolutely no sense if the dietitian is supposed to be the nutrition expert. We have had to go through all the rigors of not only obtaining a nutrition science degree but have completed a supervised practice program. I think a dietitian has got it by that point. It's insulting quite frankly.

You hit the nail on the head with all these. Also, never thought about the fact that the lack of insurance reimbursement for the services us RDs provide is why our salary is much less than RNs or other health care providers. Don’t know why that never occurred to me lol

I am a senior in hs and I’m graduating this June. I’ve been applying for dietetic programs but I started second guessing myself about it since I saw a video of a girl that became registered but never found a job at the end. I started considering doing recreational therapy instead since that also interests me but this video made me feel better about dietetics haha.

Eat Right Guy, you've got to work at changing the protocol at your clinic! At one time, maybe dietitians did lack competency, but we don't anymore! Change your place and benefit all the dietitians after you.
Excellent video!

Your responses and insight are profound, extremely helpful... thank's. Perhaps your professional associations need to lobby for more funding via insurance coverage to change the paradigm of the professional compensation package nationwide.

Senior Nutrition & Food Science major here, preparing for spring DI match. Great vid - thanks for being candid! The biggest con you mentioned definitely sounds like a bummer. Hopeful laws will change in the coming years so we can be more autonomous with the patient diet. I do know from some of our facility tours here in Nashville area it does depend on the facility; some will let RDs directly adjust diet and others require MD sign off (like you said). Thanks again!

Thank you for this!!!

So much love and respect to you for representing men in this field.

I'm starting my combined internship/Master's this fall and super excited, but currently working in clinical food service and see what the dietetians go through and frustrating is an understatement. I feel I share your pros and cons and I'm not licensed yet. However, I am curious to see how this field continues to unfold throughout our career. I feel it's our generation that will share the future of dietetics. ❤️

Just started college, I’m double majoring in Dietetics and Exercise Science, getting my bachelors in Dietetics and masters in Exercise Science. Any tips for someone working to become a sports dietitian?
