In this video I talk about the pros and cons of being a nurse practitioner. There are a lot of pros to being a nurse practitioner, but there are also some cons to being a nurse practitioner as well and that's what I explain in this video. From starting out in your new role as a new practitioner to gaining experience and becoming more comfortable in your nurse practitioner role, I talk about it all and my experience so far as a family/pediatric nurse practitioner working in the emergency room over the past four years.

If you are considering becoming a nurse practitioner this video will enlighten you to the realities of this role and how it compares to being a registered nurse as well as a doctor. Being a nurse practitioner can be challenging but it is also exciting and fulfilling and the decision to become a nurse practitioner is not one to be made lightly. Making the decision to become a nurse practitioner is a huge step since it will require a lot of investment including time and money as well as time away from your family and missing out on life events in order to keep school a priority. The pros and cons of being a nurse practitioner are numerous but in this video, I outline a few. If you are asking yourself "Should I become a nurse practitioner?" then I encourage you to watch this video until the end and really reflect on what the nurse practitioner role will encompass for you. I talk about the autonomy of nurse practitioners and the responsibility of nurse practitioners as well as other topics. I hope you find this video helpful!

I am a certified family and pediatric nurse practitioner. I worked many years as a registered nurse (RN) in the emergency room, then continued working in the emergency room after becoming a nurse practitioner (NP). I also did travel nursing as an ER nurse. Check out my travel nursing videos to learn more about my life as a travel nurse in California.

Great, concise video. The autonomy is great. And again, with this, comes great responsibility. I work at primary care, and the relationships I build with patients are quite invaluable. It does get better, after 1-2 years, and the learning never stops. Hope to do more procedures in the future! Thanks again for the great video!

How did you memorize so much information in your FNP program? It seems like an impossible amount to learn and memorize in school.

Hi Sandra!
Great video! I'm working on my pre-req's for Nursing School to eventually becom an ER NP.
I'm considering to get Paramedic certification first so I can work in ER during my Nursing School. I feel like Paramedic will give me a lot experience that I won't get as RN, but would be very helpful for ENP role in the future.
What do you think?

Did you go through a dual certification program to get your fnp and peds? Which program did you go through? I’ve been trying to find a fnp/peds dual program

I fear eventually NP will be the new pharmacy degree. It’s getting too saturated due to these diploma online mills, the pay is decreasing and being a bedside icu Rn, I’ve worked with NP and they all tell me that they work here part time to supplement their income. I work with new grads who immediately try to go to these online schools with no experience. The field is losing its respect. I follow med hashtags online and NP is losing the respect it used to have due to this mass production.
On the flip side, I’ve worked with amazing NPs who don’t deserve to be lumped in with these new grads.
