iPhone SE 2022 Review: Good Ol' New Phone

As I sit down and think about how to approach this iPhone SE 2022 review, I’m hearing comments from two different camps — iPhone fans who are really excited about this new phone, and people who think this phone isn’t really new. It's a 5-year-old design with new internals. I figured the best way to review is to fully move into it as I cover a tech show and go on a road trip to see if I can live off of this old new phone.

Not everybody can afford the expensive price tag of the iPhone 13. The iPhone SE models give Apple a chance to have more customers buy their products at an affordable price. I have the second generation iPhone SE. My main decision in getting the phone was I didn’t want to Spend the money on the iPhone 13. As awesome as it is. I chose the SE model due to the price. I knew I wasn’t going to get all of the core features. However when I was making up my mind on which model I was going to get. I decided that I didn’t need some of the fancy features that the iPhone 13 offers. Yes it would be nice to have those features. However it wasn’t something that I was going to use every single day on the phone. The SE met all of my standards, and any other upgrades that I get in the future from any Apple iPhone will be a nice upgrade. People are going to choose this phone depending on what they can afford and what they think they need.

I must say. I really love how you positively review every phone. Even if there are some down point specifications, you explore every possible scenarios where some of the specs are beneficial or some of are not. A subscriber here from philippines. 🇵🇭♥️

A lot of people often are blinded by the new and latest tech...1440p HDR 120hz displays, 6+ inch phone screens, 2, 3, or more cameras, minimal bezels, and so many other current trends. Their not realizing the SE model has been one of the best selling phones on the market(Top 10), every single year, since it's release. For some it gives a reprieve from lugging the heavier Pro/Pro Max phones reverting to a simpler style like for myself. Having a 12 Pro Max now I'm taking a step back to the SE for awhile at least.
On the other side for people who don't want to break the bank this is a great budget option and it's not going to leave you panicking after 1 or 2 years that it's already dying and slowing down dramatically. It's going to last for years with updates. Even if you need to pay the $49 for a battery swap 2-3 years into owning the device, that's a minimal feel compared to buying a whole new device.
Whether it's the teen getting a first phone, college student or anyone on a budget, or somebody older who wants to keep it simple and not be overwhelmed by the newer designs...this phone really is a wonderful option for many.

What I love so much about you, Michael, is that you are one of the few reviewers to give this phone such glowing praise.
So many others attacked the dated design (a merited criticism, sure) but what those reviewers fail to realize is, it's not just the "budget iPhones" that Apple doesn't really reinvent in terms of design. The 12 and 13 share the same look as the 11, minus the squared off edges. The 13 only changed it up with the camera bumps. And now the 14 really didn't do anything different with the iPhone 14/14+. Even has the same chipset as the 13. They just did something different with the Pro models.
I bought the SE 3 for my mother to replace her iPhone 8+ and she is so in love with it! Says it is such a speedy phone, loves the ability to have the fingerprint reader, and it's a delight for her to hold.

My only ciritcism with Apple...it is the bezels on this phone. I don't know why Apple doesn't get on-board with in-screen ultrasonic readers, or using the back logo for the fingerprint reader (the same way Motorola does). They could eliminate the bezels by doing that. Other than that, it's a great phone which makes the Apple customer base more wide.

Awesome review! Also thank you for being literally the only tech reviewer that told an actual difference in screen on time for the iPhone SE 3. So with an hour more then it should be about 5-5 and a half hours of screen on time. Not too bad when you consider that's about what the iPhone 13 mini gets

They could’ve gone with the box design like that of iPhone 12 mini and placed the fingerprint scanner on the side like how it’s implemented in iPad mini 6 and iPad Air 4.

I’ve always loved the design even when I had the iPhone 7. So, this is a plus.

The internals are updated, older build. Love it.

Perfect for the low key user. I’m not a gamer, I have a DSLR camera, don’t need the super hyped up cameras.

It’s smaller, compact, cheaper and more than capable.

I used to be the guy that got every new iPhone annually until I realized how much of a waste of time and money that was.

So, I am a minimalist user nowadays and I would be perfectly fine with this iPhone. I miss the horn button / Touch ID. By far faster than Face ID.

Samsung A52… crushes the SE in everything except….the A15 ! I just hope people keep that in mind and not try to make this iPhone a new 📱 .. I’m just trying to be real with consumers..I want the every day average person to know that Apple is charging too much for this phone unless you have a good trade-in…please don’t pay full the $429 !
