What Makes This Singer Great? Chris Cornell

The great Chris Cornell is probably my favorite modern rock singer of all time and today we’ll look at why.

Possessing a powerful voice with an incredible, nearly four-octave range, Chris was also known for his epic screams which were in a class of their own.

Most well known as the frontman to Soundgarden and Audioslave, Chris was also an accomplished songwriter and guitarist.

Throughout his career he sold over 30 million records worldwide and was nominated for 16 Grammys. He was also ranked "Rock's Greatest Singer" by Guitar World magazine.

Chris also pursued a solo career, in addition to other musical projects including Temple of the Dog and had reunited with Soundgarden at the time of his death.

I’ll be digging into one of his live performances and sharing what impressed me about Chris. I’d love to hear what stood out about him for you so please share with me in the comments!

Jack Black once said: "Chris Cornell sings music notes that doesn't even exist"

All his amazing power and range aside, the first thing that comes to my mind about Chris is his soul-touching expression. His unplugged performaces really bring out all the character in Chris’s voice. His acoustic cover of I Will Always Love You sounds like the man was crying. Absolute greatness.

Chris Cornell was very talented I love his songs when I was a teenager black hole sun was playing back to back on MTV I fell in love with Soundgarden and Temple of the dog and later Audioslave. Rest easy Chis you are missed and it’s a shame his wife and members of soundgarden are feuding over money now.

"What makes this singer great?" Everything. What a talent. I also have him as my personal second-best songwriter ever, behind Townes Van Zandt. Plus he was a good guitarist and drummer!

He brings so much raw emotion into his singing. And I think that's why his version of "Nothing compares 2 u" is the best version of it.

He has such a powerful booming voice that commands and captivates the audience. Yet in an interview he is so soft spoken. Ken not sure you did a reaction to Scott Weiland but, would be a great one. His acoustic version of Plush is awesome!

The first thing that comes to mind is my Ballet teacher older sister listening to Chris sing a cover of Ave Maria on a Christmas song compilation. She’s not a Soundgarden fan and was very surprised by his tone and range in that cover.
His versatility and incredible gift is the first thing I think of.

Cornell is pretty much my favorite singer. "Beyond the Wheel" and "Black Rain" show off his range and power.

Chris is one of my favorite singers. I remember the 1st time I heard him on the song Jesus Christ Pose from Badmotorfinger. I was like this guy is a power house. Temple of the Dog is amazing and Chris's vocals are amazing through out this album. I always try to push my vocals when singing and Chris is an inspiration for me. I miss him he was so talented.

Would you do a Peter Steele? That'd be cool and a little out-of-the-box.

Power, range, songwriting ability. Who can ever forget the long curly hair and long black shorts with no shirt look? The other-worldly vocals in Jesus Christ pose. He said that no-one ever really complimented him on his songwriting ability until Johnny Cash covered Rusty Cage. So many classics he wrote with SG, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog and as a solo artist. The post-humous grammy as well for a stellar song (When Bad Does Good). Too many classics to mention, but a few of my favourites are Spoonman, The Day I Tried to Live, Cochise, Hunger Strike, Say Hello to Heaven, Call me a Dog, Like a Stone, Show me how to Live, & Fell on Black Days. Then his solo work... wow.... Nearly Forgot my Broken Heart, Murderer of Blue Skies, and Sweet Euphoria. Then there was his stunning rendition of Prince's "Nothing Compares to u". His beautiful friendship with Chester Bennington was a highlight including when they performed Hunger Strike together on stage and Chester did Chris' high parts while Chris sang the Eddie Vedder bits.

Undoubtedly his most important work with the movie "The Silent Children" will never see the light of day. Gone but not forgotten, a great loss to the world on so many levels.

Also my favourite modern rock singer of all time. He was such an all-around amazing artist too, not only his voice.
