What Makes This Singer Great? Geoff Tate - Queensryche

When I think of Geoff Tate I think of someone who was incredibly innovative and who made music that definitely raised the bar.

As frontman to Queensryche, Geoff pioneered a progressive sound that was led by his big, thick, wobbly vibrato.

Also known for his incredible tone, Geoff had a knack for being very theatrical and melodramatic in his approach.

Able to easily shift from singing light to heavy, he used good mixed voice and could hold those long, epic notes.

As I explore what all I think made Geoff great, I'm going to dive into a few of his performances to get a broader feel for what set him apart.

I'd love to hear what you loved about Geoff so please be sure to let me know your thoughts in the comments!

"Take Hold Of The Flame" from that Live In Tokyo DVD is still probably the single greatest live rock performance of all time

Back in '1999, my old band was talking to the 2 ladies running the merch booth at the Queensryche show for quite a while. Turns out it was Geoff's wife and tour manager, Anita. They then asked if we wanted to come meet the band and hang with them after the show. We did and then got asked to hang with them again at consecutive shows. After hearing our demo, we got offered a 2 week spot to open for them. All was working toward it and we were ready to our band had internal fighting and broke apart.

At least Queensryche and their whole crew were awesome people to hang out with. ....

The thing about Geoff Tate is it isn't just about the range of his voice, because LaTorre and other singers can hit and sustain all those high notes Tate has to be cautious about nowadays - but it's the tone and timbre and emotion of his voice. It's like the difference people can hear between a newly made violin and a classic Stradivarius.

IMO Chris DeGarmo’s vocals were integral to the Queensryche sound. Especially live, the band was never as great without his playing and his vocal contributions. 😔

Geoff is my favorite singer of all time and his lyrics were phenomenal.

Like all great bands, every musician in that group were incredible in their own right. They had the incredible chemistry.

Queensryche was one of the most profound concerts I have ever been to. Geoff Tate's stagecraft and amazing voice simply took me to a place I have never been, it was profound. I must say it was almost like a religious experience :) When they finished up with silent lucidity it was awesome. At 56 I still listen to this band weekly and thanks for doing this piece.

Vocal g o a t. Range, power, emotion unmatched. Have seen him rock arenas and small clubs. Gives his all in every show. Just this year saw the full Rage & Empire set, still amazing. Halford, Dio, Mercury all a close second but Tate is the goat.

Operation Mindcrime is a musical masterpiece, it totally blew my socks off when I first listened to it. And I still have it on CD...yes CD! Keep rockin' Ken.

I've seen Queensryche 13 times and Geoff twice. My favorite band ever and my favorite singer ever. Of course his range is amazing. He has a tremendous rich undertone as well. His voice is kind of addictive like chocolate. You get a taste and find yourself wanting more. He is a master of his craft. He plays to the fans. His vibrato is great. His ability to announce words so perfectly whether he's singing with power or with the smooth chocolate is amazing. A MASTER FOR SURE!

Operation Mindcrime is THE masterpiece in Rock history. I was glad to see them live with their Operation Mindcrime / Empire tour in the early 90s in Germany. Suite Sister Mary live was the best I've ever heard to date.

Been following Queensryche since 1988 and seen them live over 20 times and wish it was 1000. Had the honor of meeting Geoff before a show in 2005 and told him how important their music was to me and that his voice and lyrical ability to me is the best ever. He was humble in his response and just showed a tremendous amount of class and sincerity. A true great.

I saw Queensryche perform with Dream Theater in Seattle. At the end of the show they mixed the bands up and performed each others songs. Hearing Geoff sing Dream Theater tunes was one of the greatest concert experiences I've ever had. Stunning singing, stunning playing, and overall a fantastic show.

One of the most phenomenal things about Queensreiche with Geoff Tate was his sound. He has such a specific sound and his vocals are so hard to duplicate. Operation Mindcrime was just out of this world great. The band as a whole was 100% on delivery

Geoff Tate is a phenomenal singer and performer. I never saw them live, but this band was unique. They had a sound that separated them from others. I can listen to Geoff Tate sing all day.

I saw Queensryche in Indianapolis in February of 2000 and was absolutely blown away by not only the band but by Geoff Tate. He is one of a kind and he delivers his lyrics like he is experiencing the pain in real time. He is my fav.

Geoff is magnetic like a ball of frenzied energy always moving. His mannerism on stage is captivating. Of course his vocal range is amazing but his true gift is his dramatic stage performances. Its not overstated either he balances his high energy kicks spins etc with the softness of sensuality. He's very imaginative in his gestures. At times watching him in concert makes me feel like I'm in a full balcony theater watching some great opera to make me cry. No other heavy metal band has this effect on me. He is the greatest singer of his era.😱😱😱😱😱😱💗💗💗💗💗💗

His tone is what makes him special. The live in Tokyo ‘84 concert (especially Take Hold of the Flame) may be the greatest live performance I’ve ever heard. Why does he remind me of Elvis??

Everything. The emotion, power, conviction, Range. From the Subtle and beautiful like Anybody listening? To deep and emotional NO Sactuary. He doesn't take songs off. The entire Rage for Order album is a masterclass in singing. Neue Ragal, The Whisper and London are a display of talent and feeling. While I Will remember is haunting in its honesty and simplicity. Just a pure story teller.

Geoff Tate is just one of the greatest male singers of all time. Love your voice and channel too. When I started singing Geoff was my idol. I tried to emulate him as much as possible. In a way I think ive found my voice now, but still can hear his influence background. But I got to admit, he is still better than me 😁. Live Evolution blew my mind. That quality is out of this world
