What Makes a Great Singer | Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

What Makes A Great Singer?

This is such a subjective concept.

In a world that places such an emphasis on range (and physical beauty unfortunately) it's good to talk about this important topic for singers.

One person likes one singer because of range and power, another person like a singer because of their storytelling or transparency, another person likes a singer because of their intensity and so on.

In this video we discuss various types of singers and what makes them great.

I hope you enjoy it and I welcome your thoughts and comments.

If the vocal is....
Honest
Vocabulary integrity
Has meaning or relatable content to you as an individual.
It does not matter if
The tone is
Bob Dylan or Steve Perry.

Thank you Mr. Tamplin.

To me a great singer is someone with a unique voice that sings with emotion, clear diction and doesn’t need a million notes to get their point across. Nina Simone, Kate Bush, Mark Hollis (from the band Talk Talk) are just 3 off the top of my head. There are many more...

I think that the main characteristic of a great singer is to have the ability to touch the soul of the listeners. Having that passion for music that always achieves connection with the audience. ♥️🎼

Funny. I just told one of my voice students the other week that the difference between a good singer and great singer is empathy. As musicians, we are manipulation artists, essentially. If your audience isn't feeling the way you want them to feel in any given moment thru your craft, then we're not doing our job right. God has blessed me with an insane range, but some of my most favorite recordings we're the ones that didn't go into the stratosphere. The beauty of simplicity. Raw, honest, heart-felt simplicity.

You need the skills, skills makes you creat, but feelings and emotions creates magic. Take a look at the guys in 2Cellos. Have a great weekend Ken :)

This is one of those beauty is in the eyes of the beholder questions. For me, a great singer is anyone whose performance makes me feel more alive and for that moment in time, allows me to completely open and surrender my soul to them.

I would say emotion, tone, pitch, range, artistry, presence, be entertaining, sing about things that matter to you and that you want to share, consistency, and uniqueness

OMG. I AGREED WITH ALL U HAVE SAID! Right down to the example of Bob D. I realized the criticality of ability to story tell ! When I was in HS and in band, choir at church, school choir. Marching and Concert I was excelling in several specific areas of piano, flute and singing. My Jr and Sr years, I could play most pop ballads of that time and could just blow people away withStairway to Heaven. At the time I didn’t realize what I had was NOT talent. It was really being competitive and DETERMINED to be better than all the stuck up kids that used to bully me. I took first chair flute away from the Jrs and Srs when I auditioned in 9th grade. Anyway in hindsight, I was just repeating lines and phrases x a billion and demanding perfection. It’s a kind of talent to dedicate yourself and hard work DOES pay off I suppose it’s good that I’m self aware, too. Thanks Ken for all the great points that I think most take for granted 🤗

Great observations! I completely agree with you. Your example is Dylan, mine would be Leonard Cohen. He was one of the greatest who's voice was "beyond singing" if you will. There are many great singers with great a great voice, but still can't touch my heart. As a singer if you can't "sell" the story of the song to your audience you will never be truly great no matter how good is your voice. Skills alone can get you close to the top, but how well can you emote on stage is the only thing that could make you a legend.

I would not say that I am a great singer however when I sing at karaoke I always get repeat requests for songs and always get a warm response from the audience. Whether it be serious or comical a my song choice

I feel Amy Winehouse is the best singer I've ever heard but I'm not smart with music and wanted a better understanding. This explains a lot. I always felt Amy had 100 years of jazz in her vocals, sheer talent and gift but couldn't grasp why and how. Really helpful and thank you🤗

Edit: After thinking more on it for a moment, it seems she was a master at both sides you discuss. The artistic and technical. Makes a lot of sense. She sang her whole life, plenty of practice. Pair that with her natural talent for the artistic side and I see it more clearly now.

Much appreciated🙏

You know I love listening to you. I take your videos over anyones. Cause You don't hide anything from anyone, you're very deeply knowledgeable, really a genuine person that really want to help people and put them on the right path. If I have got a question, you you have an answer the best you can answer. Not just here you go leave me alone, go through trenches on your own. My grandma always use to say, don't try to have 100 dollars try to have 100 friends. Don't trade true friends/family for money

I think I just enjoyed your performance...
I'm just someone that likes to be entertained. I can't get through a day without music, but have no interest in learning to sing. Still I click & listen to every word you have to say every day.
You and your shirts are interesting whatever you're doing. You're quite good at this.
Too bad none of my high school teachers had this talent to hold my attention. I just had no interest:/

Great Info Ken!

For me personally:
1. Vocal abilities such as melisma, riffs and runs, resonance in upper belts
2. Musical artistry such as songwriting ability, produce own songs
3. Vocal suicide songs

P.S Tips I learn from Mariah.

Thanks for sharing Ken :) I've bought your program and i've had it for awhile, but I always run into bumps on the road thinking that I need to increase range and would always get frustrated of going no where! I found out why and that's because I haven't really found what kind of artist I want to be. To start with, I've been looking at which artist that have influenced me and that I still listen to and why. I hope to find this answer soon so I can finally pick a direction.
