What Makes This Singer Great? John Fogerty

John Fogerty is the perfect balance between a great singer-songwriter and a great singer-performer.

His songs are very engaging with good storytelling and the tunes are always catchy and memorable.

Instrumentally, John has always had great guitar riffs, and the hooks are always very unforgettable.

As frontman to Creedence Clearwater Revival, John did it all, writing the songs, playing guitar, and even producing.

After leaving CCR, John pursued a solo career which is still active today and he has gone on to be named in both Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Songwriters and 100 Greatest Singers.

I'll be taking a look at a live performance of John as I share more of what I thought made him great. I'd love to get your input as well so please let me know what you thought of him in the comments!

Also be sure to check out the versions I did of John's tunes here:

Here also are a couple of CCR tunes my student Tori Matthieu did:

Soul, phrasing, unique pronunciation, great tone, and controlled power. Born On The Bayou, a favorite.

For me hands down JF is the man of just driving and playing a cd and just day dreaming. I grew up on his music. Great writing!
Even in solo. Center field etc. The man was born to write songs that anyone can relate to. No fancy guitar solos, no crazy vocals just good old fashion songs.

Love John Fogerty. Still belting and hitting those high notes to this day! I'd suggest the legendary Van Morrison for a video.

John Fogerty is great through everything he does, his voice, his guitar on fire, his songs his family. Is the best of the best ever.

When you said " timeless ", you hit the nail on the head. CCR/J.F. Will be a staple for all rock, Country, blues fans for decades to come.
Thanks for highlighting one of the best bands of my youth.

You nailed it Ken, John Fogerty’s music is timeless; the gritty vocals that for me is so cool, so real, kind of a “working man’s” vocal style. Powerful when required! And cool original guitar riffs that makes a banjo player like me want to cave in and go buy a Les Paul and Marshall amp!

I think John sounds better live then the his recording. And He truly looks like he loves be on stage and performing.

So much to say about John. Since first time I heard him. I was about 10. It became my feel good music. My babies cradle music. No lullaby's for them. It was CCR. And will be played at my funeral. Last thing on my bucket list! Seeing John Fogerty. Wishful thinking. Yes! I love him. What makes Freddie Mercury great? I think I know.

For me hands down. When you hear old man down the road. That just totally captures the uniqueness of his voice. Also a really awesome song to play if you are on a roadtrip

Octave changes. Grit and smooth. Ease of power. He’s really special. I think the dual tonality of his voice is really what makes him amazing.

Wow Ken, you are like picking all of my heroes and major influences. John and CCR is where I learned to play guitar growing up and I love everything he does. You really payed him very nice comments, his music is timeless which I think is a requirement when you separate the outstanding from the greats. Again, thanks so much, Ken, for doing these great videos on such great artists, these are so awesome.

I was 8 years old when I first heard John Fogerty. It was Lodi and I get the feeling, wow I never heard such a good and amazing singing. My 2 older brothers had 3 more singles off CCR and from that time I was completely fan from CCR. And now I'm 57 years old I know all the CCR songs but also the solo albums from John fogerty. He's my hero all times.
But many people don't know that Proud Mary, Rockin' all over the world are from John. But when they hear the nummers then they know them John Fogerty is still verry populair. When he gives a concert he's still at this age verry good and his son Shane playes allso with him.
I feel that other artist have more fame, but CCR was a in a short time verry famous. But they can't say that John Fogerty isn't popular because all his concerts are sold out.
I'm sad that he cancelled his concerts in Europe because off the war in Oekraïne. But I understand his concerts. For me is the best song
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN?
When he plays that song live all ths people sing along. That's really feeling like you understand where that song was written for. Not what John say now ( for his daughter ) but he brought it out of the album Pendulum and than if you listen to the text, it's that he was feeling that CCR was at the end. And that hurts him. So thank you John for all your fantastic music, and I hope I ❤👍👍can see you sometime.🥰🥰🥰😘😘😘❤
