Jim Morrison - The Doors - What Makes This Singer Great

Which artists would you say represent the epitome of the 60s and 70s for you?

For me Jim Morrison's name definitely makes that list as he was a true innovator, both in his sound and in his songwriting.

Jim also had that crooner-esque quality to his singing but in a more pop rock sort of way.

Having been such a huge influence on so many people, his music always felt like you were being taken on a musical journey.

Which of his songs were your favorites? Let me know in the comments.

He had a huge charisma, commanding stage presence and his lyrics showed a very special point of view, like a poet. Great analysis Ken!

In this song there was a lot of sensuality in his voice, the song, the mood. For an untrained voice he could push his voice despite “limitations “ and infuse it with feeling. Jim was pretty angry and that was in his music as well. Also in the 60’s there at this time was a lot of happy, sunshine pop infiltration in music. The Doors brought some much needed balance of dark, primitive, sexual energy. Jim was also smart as shit with an IQ of 145. He had already read massive amounts of literature and really wrote some powerful, dark poetry. He really deeply loved his girlfriend Pam as well. Too bad it was all destroyed by his alcoholism and drug addiction. Still his time on earth was wonderful. I’ll never forget him

Jim got a helluva lot of attention for his image, stage show, and poetry. It's about time someone focused on what a great SINGER he was!!!

I was born in 1970, so I never get the chance to see The Doors live. But when I was a kid maybe eight or nine, I remember the first time, that I saw a documentary or something about The Doors in a german TV show, and I was totally blown away, not knowing what was going on. This guy (and years later I realized, that this fellow was Jim Morrison...) had something that I can't explain, as a kid I could not understand, but it was this strange kind of feeling... Everytime I listen to The Doors, I get those nostalgic emotions, about a californian scenery, memories about things that I've never seen, and that only exist in my mind. After a second of listening to a Doors song, you're totally in...and the ceremony is about to begin... Greetz Marco

Its tragic how the world was robbed of such amazingly beautiful souls gone way too early in life. Jim was such a free spirit with a tortured soul. Yet we he sang it was like heaven. Music really is special

Jim was a poet turned singer. A real original. My brother sounded just like him.

I was so obsessed with Jim. His poetry, his voice, his face, his HAIR. Omg I still love him lol. I had The Doors and Jim posters all over my room, one of them was a vintage flyer for a live show, $4.00 admission. Can you imagine!? I wished I was alive back then so bad!!

You mention he didn't have range. I believe Jim Morrison had one of the best shouts in rock history. He could croon, but man, he could wail -- "Backdoor Man" (best example -- wailing on As)..."Break On Through" and "Roadhouse Blues" also showcase his higher tenor extension...

Not just a singer, but an artist! He was the first to turn the rock vocalist into an artist. The way he changes his voice throughout the song in a very unique way, almost inimitatble. Probably my favorite singer after Tim Buckley.

Jim Morrison and his band are the greatest of all time, just like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Pink Floyd. They are unclassifiable, irrotulable and timeless. He turned all his sadness into art. Very good analysis, Ken!

I always felt, like you, Jim came off as, dark and mysterious. His vocals gave me a bit of a melancholy, feel, with its deep, haunting, yet soothing, sound. He was the whole package, without having to rely, completely, on his ability to sing. Perfect, analogy, Ken.

He got the full package man including all of them as a band. The Doors was and still a very special life journey for me as a fan. Jim... he can move from one side to the other, kind of Dr. Jekyll & Hyde; from a sweet and friendly human being, to a soul in chaos reflected in his performances, excess and dark poetry. I can't imagine him in other way . There are people who come to this world briefly for some reason, they leave their legacy and remain immortalized in their works, and I think he was one of them. Hope one day he can get all the recognition he deserves as a poet.

There's something special about Ray Manzerak's keyboard arrangements...love the small fills inside the bigger sound...The Doors have always been rock solid performers!

As an artist I also admire his "Changeling" look--From "pretty boy" that could make all the teeny bopper girls scream-n-cream to "Billy bad ass BIKER" in only about three years.😳

Many of the doors songs were haunting in their arrangement
