Episode 41: Chronic Kidney Disease Symptoms Stage 4 overview, treatment, and renal diet info you NEED to know. For those just diagnosed with CKD stage 3, this video gives an overview of how your kidney function is determined and then dives deeper into the common chronic kidney disease stage 3 symptoms you may experience. The CKD treatment outcomes highlight what the goals for treatment typically are for Stage 3. Your kidney diet (renal diet) is extremely important to slow down, stop, or reverse your kidney disease and I cover some of the common diet changes recommended with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3.

A person with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3 (CKD) has moderate kidney damage. This stage is broken up into two: a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) for Stage 3A is 45-59 mL/min and a decrease in GFR for Stage 3B is 30-44 mL/min. As kidney function declines waste products can build up in the blood causing a condition known as “uremia.” In stage 3 a person is more likely to develop complications of kidney disease such as high blood pressure, anemia (a shortage of red blood cells) and early bone disease.

Symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3
Symptoms may start to become present in stage 3:
• Fatigue
• Fluid retention, swelling (edema) of extremities and shortness of breath:
• Urination changes (foamy; dark orange, brown, tea-colored or red if it contains blood; and urinating more or less than normal)
• Kidney pain felt in their back
• Sleep problems due to muscle cramps or restless legs

Seeing a doctor when you have stage 3 CKD
As stage 3 progresses, a patient should see a nephrologist (a doctor who specializes in treating kidney disease). Nephrologists examine patients and perform lab tests so they can gather information about their condition to offer the best advice for treatment. The nephrologist’s goal is to help their patient keep their kidneys working as long as possible.

Meeting a dietitian when you have CKD stage 3
Someone in stage 3 may also be referred to a dietitian. Because the diet is such an important part of treatment, the dietitian will review a person’s lab work results and recommend a meal plan individualized for their needs. Eating a proper diet can help preserve kidney function and overall health.

Chronic Kidney Disease stage 3 diet
For CKD stage 3, a healthy diet is likely to consist of:
• Eating high-quality protein and potassium (if blood levels are above normal)
• Limiting phosphorus
• Lowering calcium consumption
• Cutting back carbohydrates for those with diabetes
• Decreasing saturated fats to help lower cholesterol
• Lowering sodium for people with high blood pressure or fluid retention by cutting out processed and pre-packaged foods
• Limiting calcium if blood levels are too high
• Taking water-soluble vitamins

More ways to manage Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 3
In addition to eating right and taking prescribed medicines, exercising regularly and not smoking are helpful to prolonging kidney health. Patients should talk to their doctors about an exercise plan. Doctors can also provide tips on how to stop smoking.

There is no cure for kidney disease, but it may be possible to stop its progress or at least slow down the damage. In many cases, the correct treatment and lifestyle changes can help keep a person and their kidneys healthier longer.

I was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2020 due to Vasculitis. I have been following your advice for about a year now. When I was first dignosed I was at stage 5. With diet I have been able to get my kidneys to stage 3b. My nephrologist didn't think I would be able to get much function back because there was just a lot of damage from the vasculitis. Well I eat a plant forward diet, no processed anything and like I said, my function has increased to 3b. Trying for 3a next. Thank you for being here kidney coach. !

I live in the UK, was diagnosed with aging stage three kidney disease threeyears ago. I've only had one blood test since and they told me there's no change. Then covid hit us all and had no tests done since, I have a lot of these symptoms so I'm going to ask my doctor for a blood test today. Thank you for the information

Thank you. I just found out I have stage three kidney disease. I think volunteering at a kidney clinic is really great advice. I have a hard time losing weight. Now I have a different outlook, but if I cant loose weight, I am going to a kidney clinic to volunteer. I think it would help see the light. Thanks.

My dad has multiple health issues, and was recently hospitalized 3x in the span of a month for what he and doctors thought might be heart, then esophagus problems. I watched your video ‘12 Signs of Kidney Damage’ and my dad is actively experiencing at least 9 of the symptoms! After being CKD stage 3 for many years, I’m learning that he’s had no practical guidance for managing this disease! His favorite foods have been bananas, avocado, tomatoes, cheese, potatoes, etc!!! He’s reluctant to contact an RD because they may not be covered by insurance. Finding your information has been a Godsend. Thank you for your passion to help others navigate the confusing journey with CKD.

Going into my first visit with a Nephrologist today, GP gave referral, as they believe labs indicate stage 3. symptoms can't stay asleep and early morning hand tremors. After going through the depression and anxiety of the unknown, your video is up lifting and I'm now looking forward to moving on and getting better. Thank you

Hi James, I was diagnosed with stage 3 kidney disease 6 years ago. I have managed to stay at stage 3 and you have inspired me to try my best to move to stage 2. I was told by my Nephrologist, that I would probably just stay at stage 3 for the rest of my life. Your videos are very helpful. I truly appreciate you sharing your journey and all of the information you provide.

Dadvice, You are fantastic on breaking it down for everyone to understand what they need to do and to ask their Doctor the important questions. Best Kidney Channel !!! A shame they don't give Trophy's to best and informative videos on YouTube. Maybe we should start that process ? :)

Just wanted to thank you for this channel and all the work you put into it. I am 38, and Just about 1 year ago on feb 13 2023 i went into icu and was charged with stage 5 ckd with a GFR of 10. I also had systolic heart failure and cardiomyopathy. It was caused bt a hypertebsive crisis. I think i got high score for the day for BP. 242/160. I lost my vision as well to the point where i could not read anymore. And doing things like going from laying down to sitting upright, or going from a dark room to a lit one, my vision woulf go completely black and i could not even see my hand 2" in front of my face. In the hospital i had severla doctors comign at me asking me tons of questions but not telling me much. Eventually they sent in the nephrologist and he told me i would need to be on dialysis if i wanted to live longer. I did not qualify for a transplant due to my bmi. So that really was shocking to hear. But then another doctor came in and told me sort of tongue in cheek that if i am still making urine then i do not need dialysis. So that gave me a glimmer of hope.. and i found this channel. I studied up. And i made some changes to my diet. I didnt go as far as to go full plant based. But i moved away from processd foods and stated eating more fruits and veggies. Cut the sodium.... when i left the hospital they told me nothing. Just "limit sodium and potassium" they didnt even give me a rexommended amount. Nothing. I had to ask very specific questions to get infornation on how to mitigate or slow damage. So this channel helped with that.. i left the hospital on feb 18th. In march my labs showed a gfr of 16. So i continued to ween off meat. In august i went back for labs again and my GFR had gone up to 21. Around october i gave up the meat. In december i had an echo on my heart and it had normalized.. i had also been experimenting with grounding, and energy healing, and sound healing, which i know sounds quacky but i was desperate... Recently started doing sessions with eesystems energy healing, i went in for labs last week, feb 2024, and my gfr was a 34!! And i will be hoenst. Ive been using salt for a while.. no more swelling. No more water retention. No more edema in my lungs and legs... at one poiny my ankles ans calves were so swollen i couldnt fit shoes... i couldnt walk literally 25 feet without either stoppii g to gasp for my breath or near fainting. Sometimes had to drop to the floor to catch my breath. I thought i didnt have a hope in the world. I literally had written my life off ans being over. I told my mom if i had to do dialysis that i wanted to just die.. but your channel, and the informatkon your guests have put out, i think really saved my life. I feel normal agaian. I am still blind in my left eye.. but i am starting to see color in it again, and i cab see my nose. I also can read again and write obviously. Stull have a little trouble with typing becusse my depth perception is out of whack. But im here, im healthy. I can walk again as far as i want. My blood pressure is somewhat under control.. my kidneys are healing.. i seriosuly think i would have given up if i hadn't found your channel and really studied. I probably would not be alive right now. So thank you James, you rock!

I didn't know you can volunteer at a dialysis facility. Once the world gets back to normal, that is one thing I will be doing. Thanks again for the Great Info!! Plus, I think it's a good way to get questions answered/free advice, stay on top of the latest trends in the CKD industry and help out people that really need it.
