Possibly the most unrealistic thing of The Purge is that it presents a scenario where it's every man for himself. That's not how humans operate. We're a strongly social species, so if The Purge was a thing, people wouldn't huddle in their homes hoping for the best; People would organize weeks if not months in advance. Neighbourhoods would stablish a more or less regulated militia, barricades would be erected and strangers would be expected to stay the fuck out on pain of death. Also, police and soldiers who took their job seriously would simply be out and about as civilians acting almost like The Punisher, which would paradoxically make The Purge the most dangerous day of the year to actually commit any crime; These vigilantes would shoot first and ask questions never.

Far from being a "do whatever the fuck you want" day, it would be a "you best stay on your very best behaviour or you'll get shot in the head" day, which kinda defeats the purpose.

He made some good points, but I'm kinda surprised he didn't talk about the potential of a terrorist attack. Imagine sleeper cells armed, trained, and directed by a foreign entity activating on purge night and wreaking havoc upon US infrastructure and industry. We'd be completely helpless because they can't be prosecuted or even investigated.

Another thought, the US would also be very vulnerable to foreign invaders on purge night. If someone infiltrated power plants there would be chaos. All the foreign power would have to do is take the major cities.

1) The day of the purge is known, so most sensible businesses would close down days if not weeks before the purge. Valuable inventory would be shipped to Mexico/Canada for temporary storage. Less valuable inventory would be sold out/not replenished in the weeks leading up to the purge. The most you could steal from walmart/banks are probably pens and gum. Large industrial sites like oil refineries would be shut down, and emptied of dangerous substances. Sabotaging an oil pipeline would be bad, but wouldn't lead to the catastrophic damage suggested here.
2) Most capital intensive businesses would die. Nuclear power plants/Intel chip manufacturing/etc take years to break even. If it can't turn a profit before it's burned to the ground, nobody will try it. This is probably the part that will hit the economy the hardest.

I live in a town of 20, 000 in Nebraska. If the Purge happened here, half of the town would be out on the streets with their guns helping uphold what would be on other days the law. Just because the laws go away doesn't mean people's morals do.

Do they think that laws are the only thing that keep people from going on a rampage. Most of the people would just live their normal lives and be a little more careful.
