Everyday talented professionals who deserve to get promoted are overlooked, ignored, and undermined all for one reason: they avoid office politics. Corporate politics get a bad name from bad players, the coworkers who sabotage you, and the bosses who steal your ideas. But office politics shouldn’t be dirty, complicated, or confusing - and they won’t be once you learn how to navigate politics like a boss.

I've learned the hard way that just showing up, working hard, putting your nose to the grindstone, and going home, it's one of the worst things you can do for your career. Even if you don't fall victim to gossip, you will come across as disengaged and uninterested. Meanwhile other people around you who objectively are not as good at their job will be recognized, appreciated, and promoted because they are part of the social group that is the office.

Hence why I'm willing to take a major pay cut to work from home!

I feel so called out right now 😂
I am now starting to see the "game" for what it is, after so many mistakes because it really is soul crushing to see how a misstep can cause so many issues, especially for us neurodivergents who were never given the rulebook to begin with.

The most unstable, ungrounded narcissists are the ones who excel, and they’re typically mediocre and ineffective at their jobs. I’ve experienced or witnessed it time and again. We aren’t living in a meritocracy, we’re living in a society where sociopaths who a**kiss just enough (and usurp their colleagues accomplishments) are the ones who excel. In fact, I just happened to see a former coworker’s LinkedIn and she completely hoovered all of my accomplishments AND position title, applying it to get a job selling community building software. She was the most disorganized human being, terrible at her actual job, and would call me drunk to complain about coworkers…but this is what’s championed in society because “politics” and “you have to play the game.” Nonsense. Absolute nonsense. This is why we’re a breath away from full idocracy right now.

I've dodged it and it's done wonders for my career. I've won by not playing.

Ha whatever! I always opted out of office politics and never had a problem. Then I got a remote job and it was even better.

It's true, I've been at a job where I avoided politics, kept to my own thought it was the smart bet. But all that did was isolate me, I was out of the loop on important things, hearsay and rumors, that would effectively make my perspective on what was going on better. It's good to mingle, throw your two cents in to let people know you're on their side, even if you're not💯😎👌🏽

So it is basically people who crawl to the management to get to the top, by doing lots of overtime, and buying the boss drinks and such in the canteen, and even trying to pip deserving colleagues to the post by rubbishing them. As I said, I got a temporary promotion when the usual team leader was away, and a colleague who I had got on with was quite unhelpful and sulky as he was good pals with the team leader, so thought he should get the job. I was 19 and the colleague was 58, he may have been jealous that a much younger person got the job over him.

Ignoring and Avoiding office politics is a breath of fresh air. Management in American has failed, let them and let the competent people pick up the pieces.

O worked in an Orwellian call center a few years ago. Worst job ever. I found colleagues were every bit as bad as customers, not only for manipulation, my shifts being placed around them (when they were on leave). However, I kept to myself, minded my own business, avoided cliques etc, was punctual and attentive. Nevermind, an offensive note was placed at my desk for everyone to see etc. I tried to avoid gossip and politics at all times and ironically ended up being the centre of it a few times. I can confirm that you will get caught up in workplace politics whether you want to or not (good bad ugly etc) i used to believe hard work dedication and sacrifices got you to the top (nevermind), i also thought HR was there for me (nevermind lol). The best lessons in life are the ones you learn yourself the hard way to. I could go on. Have a good day reader.

I've never engaged in office politics...I just slept my way to the top.

Beware of baiting comments from coworkers. Don’t respond to questions about your opinion about a manager, coworker or office policies. Your responses will be twisted and used against you.

I just hate drama, but you are absolutely correct.

As much as I hate office politics, I agree with the message. You are just making sure no one steals your work and you need to preserve your integrity. There are a lot of people who want to rise to the top by dragging or bringing other people down.

(Also, the content is good and important for the career growth for a lot of people, idk why some are commenting on the content creator’s attractiveness or outfit. Is this literally the 60’s or something or is the mentality stuck there?)

Sounds verbatim like my old job, other guy never wasted an opportunity to make me look bad, even had the manager calling me accusing me of taking something (that was broken) home, like i’d have use for a random broken thing, I can’t believe they fell for such a preposterous accusation

I absolutely need to subscribe to your channel. I have been working hard all of my life. Graduated from freakin Ivy League. Bosses have always enticed me with possible promotions but I have never actually gotten one. I am working mother of two now. I don’t need a promotion at this point. I just want to avoid being the target when all I do is stay quiet and work hard- which was my biggest mistake.

Unfortunately I've found that if you stand up for yourself, you make the matters worse/why it will never be a win win situation.
