Yes, it helps to know a cop or be related to one. My friend gave me courtesy card, and it got me instant cooperation — in situations where it would have taken a lot of explaining and/or pleading.

Like the time my black friend wanted to enter a street that was blocked off for a special event, and the cops wouldn't believe he had legitimate business there. I just flashed my card, said he's the pastor of my church, and they let him through.
