-b/a is the sum of the roots of a quadratic equation.
c/a is the product of the roots of a quadratic equation.
We learnt this like in 8th grade in India.

Makes sense. Here's the derivation:

Everyone knows the quadratic formula is "(-b ± √(b² - 4ac))÷(2a)"
When we add the + version to the - version, it will completely cancel out the sqrt
Adding the rest to itself will double the number, canceling out the division by 2
The number is still negative
That leaves you with "-b÷a"

Just did it in class, so here is the school-taught solution:

Find 2 numbers that times to make 4 but add to make three. Flip the numbers' sign, and choose a) both and b) the one that makes the most sense (if it is age, it is obviously the positive). Lot less math.

What the... Guys first that's just a linear equation. Second yes if it has real solutions you can use the Vieta's Formula for product and sum of the roots of the equation.
