Fewer people are getting married than they were decades ago. Middlebury’s Laurie Essig, author of the upcoming book, “Love, Inc.” explains why that’s a good thing.

The government needs to back off and stop discriminating against people based on whether they are married or not. Why have separate tax rates for people based on whether they are married? It's really the legal system with all the greedy attorneys that make getting married a nightmare for many.

I dont necessarily care if people get married. However, we are beginning to see results of single parenting and broken families. Children need both parents all of the time to develop into civilized adults.

Probably why fewer people are getting married is because its a sham. In history marriage was for love family structure the rearing of children and of course religion. So benefit were put in place to convince people they should get married. And then the world changed in today's capitalistic society people are not people they are a number to survive most families both parents work 40+ hrs leaving very little time with each other or there families. When finances go to cheap fights start couples get divorce kids see this and most kids of divorced parent in turn end up divorced themselves if they get married. The ones that don't get married see the dark side of marriage. Just think would you go into an agreement with one of your friends hey we are gonna be a team but if things don't work out I get our kids half your pay check for the next 1-21yrs more of your paycheck for alimony but you get half or all of the debt. In turn you will get to hang out with me daily spend time with me and you won't have to pay such a high tax rate and get a gym discount. Seems laughable but its true. Also you know that a single mother now days can make more by having kids with someone and them paying child support than if they married health benefits for the kids food stamp housing assistance welfare and child support on top of an income that doesn't have to goto food clothing rent why would a girl get married the pros out weigh the cons. So you ask me the system is geared to help single parents to a degree marriage is not needed and its too big of a penalty if the marriage fails.

Marriage is a decaying institution! It's the law of diminishing returns for men.

Marriage is totally unnecessary for love or a quality relationship. It was never designed to be just for love and has always been tied to religion and/or authority, which are also unnecessary for love. Rights or any civil bonuses should definitely not be given or taken because of it. Just like race or sexual orientation, peoples status should not be based on marriage. If people want to get married they should be allowed but they don't deserve special rewards or respect lol

A strong marriage can build a strong family. Families make communities. Communities make the nation. We recognize this, and that's why we have so many benefits surrounding marriage. But of course the left thinks it's "oppression". Because really, it's just horrible to have a man who actually loves you and provides for you.

Ummm... But all of those institutions (church, communities, bowling leagues ffs) have faded in importance. There's no evidence that if people weren't married those would be bolstered.

I can agree with the premise about the government getting out of refereeing marriage, because the government pretty much sucks at everything, but not that marriage makes people unhappy (the opposite is true in just about every study done on it)
