Why are people not getting married anymore?

89% of the world’s population now live in countries with falling rates. In the U.S., marriage has declined by 60% since the 1970s, while median age for first marriages has increased for both men and women.

“There are a couple of big factors here in play. One major factor is the changing economy”, said Brad Wilcox, director of the National Marriage Project at University of Virginia.

The phenomenon affects many countries in the world but it’s most pressing in east and south Asia, where marriage and childbirth are highly correlated.

“Governments all over the world are worried because of economic implications”, said Dr Leng Leng Thang of National University of Singapore.

The decline of marriage is turning into a demographic crisis for Japan which is the world’s third largest economy and home to the world’s oldest population.

And a similar problem is troubling authorities in China, which registered the fewest marriages in 2022 since public records began.

“By 2050, China's working population will be reduced by 10%, and not enough babies will be born to fill that gap. The dependent population, those who reach retirement age, will double” warned Dr Ye Liu from King’s College London.

Watch the video above to learn what causes increasing number of couples around the world to opt out of marriage.

The best way to avoid divorce court? Never get married.

Experienced divorce attorney here. Marriage is simply too big a risk in modern times. Divorce and family court can derail your life, even if you didn’t do anything wrong. Better to live your best life and do the things that bring you joy. You can still have terrific relationships without inviting state laws into your life and finances.

It’s amazing how they talk about how expensive it is to get married, and they never mentioned how financially devastating it is to get divorced.

People can’t afford rings, clothes, ceremony, transport, honeymoon, house deposit (let alone actual house), pregnancy, medical bills for child’s birth, daycare, schooling. We’re just hoping we can afford to get old.

Marriage is simply too financially costly. If you screw up and choose the wrong partner, it literally destroys you economically. My parents always told me never to marry.

as a GenZ living in Turkey, the issue with the marriage is not about rising expenses but finding someone that you can trust. Everyone is playing around, no one can expect young people to get married.

I work 60-70 hours a week to make ends meet, when am I supposed to date? Or meet anyone? On top of that I've worked way too hard to risk marrying the wrong person and destroying my personal or financial life, let alone my mental health. I've seen what bad marriages can do and it it's better to be single and free than with someone and miserable.

Casual sex, and sex outside marriage are no longer taboo, so rushing to get married aged 18/19 just to get 'laid' (which was the case until the mid-20th century) no longer carries the same appeal. Dating apps and societal values encourage short-term casual relationships over long-term commitment.

My wife through false allegations of child abuse tried to win divorce and put me into prison. She won temporary custody. After 3.5 years the court cleared me of initial accusation, but now my children who used to love me don't want to see me at all. The ex spouse didn’t get any punishment for false allegations. It cost me a lot of money to fight in courts to clear my name. Too sad the system is one sided. I lost all my faith in justice. The social workers from department of children who initially believed all words without any proof didn’t lose their jobs either. They ruined my relationship with children.

I did my part. I had 3 children. Today, childcare, child rearing are too costly. I don’t blame anyone who chooses not to marry or have children. It’s hard enough to financially sustain oneself.

You addressed everything except the real issues. The steep economic decline, severe inflation with practically unchanged wages, higher workload, longer work hours, insanely competitive workplace with less chance of promotion, longer studies, cultural shifts, severe societal division and distrust of one another, p0rn addiction, etc etc.

She keeps her stuff while getting half of his stuff, and it's up to her whether or not she wants to keep the kids.
She cheats, she gets everything, he cheats, he loses everything.

Marriage was turned into an exclusive career for women, that's why.

marriage is not a solution. you need to solve all your childhood trauma on your own and not drag another person and kids into it. enough of generational trauma. love and heal yourself first!

Because Gen Z and Millennials have been raised by parents whose love, and marriage fell out and had to witness what kind of problems marriage and divorce can create. From financial instability, to the toll it takes on ones psyche, its just not worth it.
