Pat Morita's portrayal of Mr. Miyagi was so good that an entire generation of kids who grew up on these movies and never knew Pat himself, mourn the loss of Mr. Miyagi like they lost their own grandfather. That's how perfectly Pat Morita played that character. And I fully admit to being one of them.

I was fortunate enough to listen to Ralph speak at Portland comic con last year. What struck me was how much of a guy next door he seemed. He said he just viewed himself as the kid lucky enough to get the karate kid role. He and Pat are forever intertwined, between themselves but also within the fabric of pop culture and the 80’s. Legends never die.

This scene is so touching because it shows that the relationship between Mr. Miyagi and Daniel went deeper than just teacher and student. Daniel was the son Mr. Miyagi never had and he was the father that Daniel never had. That also stretches to Johnny when we learn more about his background. He never had that relationship that was strong enough to shape his life years later. The creative team behind Cobra Kai deserve high praises for finding new pearls of wisdom to impart while bringing back these beloved characters. This scene made me choke up. I miss Pat so much. He was the star of that movie no matter what anyone else says. I really love Japanese culture and the wisdom they share as a people. RIP Pat to a great actor and man.
